Clear Lake’s girls and boys cross country teams each captured titles at the Belmond-Klemme Cross Country Invitational Tuesday, Sept. 6.
The girls easily outdistanced the rest of the field with an impressive 36 points. Runner-up North Iowa had 91 team points.
The boys followed suit with a score of 29. Runner-up Forest City had 53 points and GHV was third with 64.
“We swept all the races, including Junior High, Junior Varsity and Varsity,” said Coach Tyler Havens. “I was pleased with how we competed as a team and we are looking forward to seeing better competition towards the end of the month. This week we have our home meet as part of Homecoming week so we are really looking forward to it!”
The Lions will run at Veterans Memorial Thursday, Sept. 15. Action starts at 4:15 p.m. with seventh and eighth grade teams, followed by junior varsity girls at 4:55, varsity girls at 5:25 p.m., JV boys at 5:50 and varsity boys at 6:15 p.m. Teams competing include: Hampton-Dumont-CAL, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, Humboldt, Forest City, Newman Catholic, North Butler, St. Ansgar, West Fork, West Hancock, Belmond-Klemme, Central Springs, Ames (boys only), Eagle Grove and Garner-Hayfield-Ventura.
Girls race
Addison Doughan notched her first individual win of the season at Belmond. The sophomore was the only girl to break the 20-minute mark. She crossed the finish line in 19:45.88. The next closest competitor, Claire Truesdell of Roland-Story, was clocked in 21:05.
A group of five Lion runners were in the top 12. Emily McLaughlin ran a 21:54.49 to place sixth and Anna Feuerbach was eighth in 21:57.54. Places 10-12 were claimed by Lauren Englin in 22:42.58, Jadyn Heesch in 22:53.32 and Alexis Hauge in 22:55.62.
Also running at the B-K meet was: Rebekah Steinbron (23:25.09), Lydia Brattrud (23:38.65), Olivia Fausnaugh (24:54.98), Alana Evelsizer (24:59.74), Brooklyn Heesch (25:00.93), Allie Olthoff (26:57.06), Emily Benitz (27.35.63), Kristina Miller (32:10.81).
Boys race
Clear Lake’s five scoring runners all placed in the top 12, helping the team to a 24-point victory over the remainder of the field.
Jack Crane and Leo Tolentino placed fourth and fifth to lead the Lions. They crossed the finish line in 17:33.9 and 17:38.9. Next was Jaden Wright and Andrew Mixdorf, coming seventh and eighth in 17:59.1 and 18:08.6. Freshman Owen Smith was 12th in 18:32.3.
