On Tuesday, Oct. 4, Clear Lake cross country teams traveled to Manchester, Iowa to run at West Delaware’s Invitational, which is a potential state qualifying meet site. The Lions will battle for the North Central Conference crown before the push to State. Humboldt was slated to host the NCC meet Tuesday, Oct.11.
The girls had a strong performance, taking down Class 3A’s fourth rated team, Mount Vernon/Lisbon. The Lions scored 100 points to finish second behind Center Point-Urbana, with 88. Mount Vernon-Lisbon came in with 103 and Tipton was close behind with 106 points.
“We were 12 points behind CPU for a second place finish with many personal records on a fast course,” noted coach Tyler Havens.
Addison Doughan finished third for the Lions in a time of 19:07. Emily McLaughlin and Anna Feuerbach were 14th and 15th respectively in 20:37 and 20:38. Rebekah Steinbron was next, placing 33rd in 21:30 and Alexis Hauge rounded out the scoring by coming in 35th in 21:38. Also competing for the Lions was Lauren Englin, 43rd in 21:52, and Jadyn Heesch, 44th in 21:52.
The boys were led by Jack Crane once again in the varsity race. Crane ran a personal best time of 17:09 to lead the Lions.
“Some of the other guys were close to their PR from Wartburg just a few days before and ran pretty well,” said Havens.
Andrew Mixdorf, Jaden Wright and Leo Tolentino ran as a pack and captures 50th, 53rd and 56th respectively. Times were 18:03, 18:05 and 18:08. Marcus Skidmore provided the final scoring by placing 79th in 18:42. Also competing in the varsity race was Caleb Jones, 90th in 18:54, and Owen Smith, 103rd in 19:17.
Junior varsity
The girls program also made a good showing in the junior varsity race. Clear Lake was third in the 13-team field with 84 points. Tipton was the JV winner with 16. Mount Vernon-Lisbon was runner-up with 56 points.
Freshman Brooklyn Heesch was Clear Lake’s top place winner in the race. She was 11th in 22:52. Reese Brownlee continues to regain her form after missing the majority of the season with an injury. She was 13th in 22:58. Olivia Fausnaugh was 16th in 22:27 and Alana Evelsizer was 21st in 23:45. Allie Olthoff posted a time of 23:54 for 23rd place. Madison Leisure was 39th in 24:49 and Emily Benitz was 44th in 24:56.
The Lion JV boys placed fifth overall, led by Aiden Hippen and Daniel Steinbron who were both impressive running PR’s Hippen was 11th in 19:08 and Steinbron ran 19:25 to finish 19th. Ben Wolfe was next for the Lions, placing 32nd in 20:07. Weston Conway, Justin Kerr and Cael Stucky were close behind in 34th, 35th and 36th. Conway ran a time of 20:09. Kerr and Stucky were both clocked in 20:11. Hudson Uetz ran the course in 20:14 to place 41st.
“On the JV side we had many PR’s,” said Havens. “We are peaking nicely towards the end of the season.”
