October 1997

Pella Corporation, a world-leader in the manufacture of premium wood windows and doors, announced Tuesday that it has signed an agreement to purchase the assets of Cole Sewell Corporation.  Cole Sewell employs 345 people and has been in business since 1910.  It is known for being an innovative leader in premium aluminum storm doors.

Clear Lake’s new ambulance service is offering Clear Lake residents a year of free ambulance service, provided they sign up for the program during the month of November.  Joan Snell, of Snell’s Ambulance said that since the city is paying them $3,000 a month to be in Clear Lake, they felt a goodwill gesture was appropriate.

Fire officials are investigating the cause of a fire that caused structural damages of at least $30,000 to the Harlan home at 1509 N. 24th St. in Clear Lake Friday afternoon, Oct. 31.

North Iowans got a strong reminder of the hazards of winter driving, as numerous accidents were reported in the area following the first snowfall of the season on Sunday, Nov. 3.

Ventura High School will present, “Into The Woods,” a play combining the stories of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood and Rapunzel into a fun theatrical presentation for the whole family.  The show will be presented Saturday at 7 p.m. and again on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Sydney Erin Younge was born to Marcus and Robin Younge, of Clear Lake, on Oct. 8, 1997.  Sydney joins her sister, Courtney, who is one and one-half years old.

The Clear Lake Lions topped Humboldt, 7-6, but were still denied a playoff berth.  A Hampton-Dumont victory over Estherville kept the Lions from advancing into the post-season in spite of the victory.  The Lion’s score came from a 27-yard pass completion from Casey Cooney to Jeff Marsh.  Brendan Lamont added the extra point.

After several years of what could be conservatively described as sub-par volleyball, it would seem that Clear Lake is finally on the right track.  Not only did the Lions put together a winning NCC record and a respectable season mark, but they have also advanced to the second round of Regional competition.  Clear Lake faced Forest City in the District finale.  The Lions won, 3-0.  Anna Teiglan led the way with 11 kills and 13 digs.  Rachel Handeland was 17/18 hitting with 10 kills and five digs.  Brenda Dasch was a perfect 21/21 serving with four aces.

The Clear Lake varsity cheer squad received third place in Division 4 of the State High School Cheerleading Championship.  Members of the squad include Liz Jaben, Danielle Roper, Mandy Thomas, Ali Gross, Carolyn Nicholas, Laura Maring, Sarah Person, Angie Doebel, Kristy Echelberger and Christine Prohaska.  They are coached by Beth Rodriguez.

The Ventura Viking’s football season ended with a loss at the UNI-Dome against Rockwell-Swaledale, 41-14.  The game was part of Class A, District 10’s Day at the Dome.  The Vikings did not make playoffs and ended the season with an overall record of 2-7 and a 1-6 District 10 mark.

 

50 Years Ago

October 1972

The 15,000 mile walk around the world has ended tragically for one of the Kunst brothers.  John, 25, who with his brother was making the trek, was shot and killed by bandits Saturday night in Afghanistan.  David, 33, was wounded and is hospitalized in a dispensary near the American embassy and under the care of an American doctor.  The brothers started their hike from Waseca, Minn., June 20, 1970 to benefit UNICEF.  Parents of the men are Mr. and Mrs. Al Kunst, 908 6th Ave. S., Clear Lake.

Despite the fact that June is several months away, the Ventura High School Marching Band is already making plans to raise money for its trip to Canada.  About 75 kids will be making the trip to Winnipeg for the Manisphere or Red River Exhibition – a band festival.

The first event of its kind here – the Clear Lake North Iowa Winter Olympics – will be held in Clear Lake on two weekends in January.  About 13 events are being planned.  The event is sponsored by a group of interested citizens, and committees are being appointed.

There’s a new sport among Clear Lake High School students, it’s called Sea Wall Traversing.”  The main object of the sport is to see how far a person can climb along the Clear Lake Sea Wall by grasping and placing feet on protruding rocks.  The climber may not grasp the top of the wall and may not touch the ground.

 

65 Years Ago

November 1957

1,632 was the vote record for the City election.  Those elected include;  E.L. Secory, Mayor; Harold Jorgenrud, Councilman-at-large; Arthur N. Johnson, Councilman-at-large; Floyd Nesbit, Fire Ward Councilman; Carroll Anderson, Second Ward Councilman; Arleigh Eddy, Third Ward Councilman.

Don Funte, son of Mr. and Mrs. Willard R. Kline, route 2, is a freshman at Luther College and is a member of the varsity football team.

Totem pole jack-o-lanterns were erected in front of the Keith Holt residence on N. 7th St. during a party of the sixth grade Girl Scout Troop.

Mrs. Robert Cash spoke at the AmVets Auxiliary of Cerro Gordo Co. on the trips taken with her son, Walter Bill, for the Easter Seal Campaign.  She showed pictures and discussed what TV shows they appeared on, dinners they partook of, presents that Walter Bill received and of the plane trips and letters and cards they received.  Mrs. Cash said that she hopes the public is generous the next time the Easter Seal campaign comes.

 

90 Years Ago

October 1932

Kenneth Wells is now the Western Union Telegraph messenger.

Sever Severson is building a five room bungalow north of the railroad track.

A dance was held Friday evening in Thompson’s garage in honor of Mrs. Halverson’s birthday.

Miss Phyllis Thies and her pupils presented a splendid program of readings, music and playlets at their schoolhouse, Grant No. 6 Monday night.

Mrs. C.W. Gray was the recipient of a beautiful star quilt from the Star Club.  It will be remembered that Mrs. Gray lost most of her bedding in a fire in which her infant son was so badly burned several months ago.  He has almost entirely recovered and only a few scars remain of the near tragedy.  The bed in which he was sleeping was ablaze when he was rescued. It is a miracle that he was not suffocated by the smoke.
