County Supervisor District 3 seat confirmed with recount

Lori Meacham Ginapp was confirmed as the winner of the Cerro Gordo County Board of Supervisors District 3 election following a recount completed Wednesday, Nov. 23.

Ginapp had a three-vote lead over Republican Don O’Connor prior to the recount, but her lead increased to five votes after the recount was completed.

Ginapp picked up a vote in Mason City Ward 2 Precinct 1 as one ballot was originally recorded as an “undervote,” meaning the ballot machine on election day did not record a vote.  O’Connor also lost a vote in the Falls Township voting precinct as one ballot was incorrectly credited to him.

On Monday, Nov. 28, a recount of the Iowa House District 59 race began.  Results of the recount were not available by the Mirror-Reporter’s press time on Tuesday.

Incumbent Democrat Sharon Steckman won the District 59 race with 6,328 votes compared to 5,589 for Republican Doug Campbell.  However, Campbell filed for a recount saying on his campaign Facebook page that he believed the “numbers do not look right.”  Campbell said almost 12,000 people voted in his race and 10,000 of those voted for the gun rights amendment on the ballot.  He maintained Steckman was “against the Second Amendment,” causing him to question why so many would vote for her.

A three-member recount panel made up of a person each candidate selected, as well as a court-appointed neutral third member, approved using a high-speed vote scanner used in earlier recounts to verify the vote.
