Girls wrestling team is tough and never gives up

Clear Lake’s girls wrestling team got in some matches before the Thanksgiving break. The team participated in a multi-team event at Mason City High School and recorded several placements.

Seniors Emery Hippen and Olivia Fausnaugh were the top finishers for the team.  Each wrestler was second in her weight class.

“Olivia lost a tough match, 10-4, to Eagle Grove for first place, but she’s always eager to learn and grow from it,” said Coach Ray McQueen. “Win or lose, after each match, she’s looking for feedback or watching her video asking what she could have done better. She’s a great leader on and off the mat.”

“Emery also lost her finals match against West Fork,” added McQueen.  “She ended up getting pinned in the third, but I told her she’s in there with her. We just need to capitalize on the small mistakes which as a team we’re getting better at with each passing week.”

Pieper Lester, Aali Martinze, Kaci Rodman and Macey Brant were each third, while Emma Allie placed fourth.

“The girls wrestled tough and never gave up and that’s what I like about this year’s group of girls,” said Coach Ray McQueen.  “We lost some close matches and it’s off the little things— just knowing where our body is in different situations. I continue to remind the girls that wrestling is a feeling sport. As the season goes on, you’ll start to pick up on things the more you drill it at practice.”
