Three Lions won their brackets at the 12-team “Hampton Scramble” Friday, Dec. 2.
Aali Martinez (120), Rhi Youmans (130) and Emery Hippen (155) each finished first in their weight bracket.
Coach Ray McQueen said his young wrestlers are quickly settling into the sport.
“The team is starting to find their rhythm. The big thing for us is putting our moves together. All the girls aren’t afraid to take a shot. It’s finishing once we’re in on the leg part,” said McQueen.
The coach said Martinez is starting to wrestle more aggressive on the mat and be more aware of where her body needs to be when she’s hitting her shots. The aggressiveness paid off with a win. The others are also benefiting from lessons in the practice room.
Also earning placements at the scramble were: second place, Pieper Lester (120), Emma Allie (145), Zoe Koontz (145), and Olivia Fausnaugh (155); third place, Shaelyn Ulrich (110), Tessa Froiland (135) and Macey Brandt (190).
After traveling to Algona Tuesday to wrestle in their first triangular dual, the Lions return to Algona Friday Dec. 9, for a varsity meet.
