Clear Lake wrestlers gave the home crowd plenty to cheer about last week, as they hosted two triangular meets and won both.
On Tuesday, Jan. 10, the Lions tangled with a pair of non-conference schools and dominated both. They downed Garner-Hayfield-Ventura by a score of 57-15 and Nevada, 66-6.
“We knew that it was going to be an emotional night with GHV being just down the road, but the boys responded well and picked up two huge dual wins,” said Coach Evan Johnson.
North Central Conference rival Hampton-Dumont-CAL gave the Lions much more of a test when they came to town Thursday, Jan. 12. Clear Lake still managed a 38-33 victory.
Dylan Evenson got the Lions off to a quick lead with a fall at 220, but the Bulldogs picked up points on three pins and a forfeit for a 24-6 lead through six matches. Max Currier (132) and Aiden Hippen (138) provided points with a technical fall and pin respectively to pull the Lions within seven. A string of four wins provided the Lions with the win. Christian Dunning (152) had a 9-2 win, followed by pins from Carter Perry (160), Hayden Rieck (170) and Kaleb Hambly (182).
“We went out and took care of business against St. Eds and pulled off some huge late falls to rally back and beat H-D-CAL,” said Johnson.
The Lions also competed at the Osage Duals on Saturday. Clear Lake went 1-4 on the day, but according to Coach Johnson had some competitive duals against some of the best teams in the state.
“We still have lots of room to improve so we are hoping to see some of that start to take place.”
Match-by-match results from Osage were not available at press time.
