The Clear Lake City Council set Monday, March 16, as the hearing date for the city’s plan to issue $400,000 in general obligation bonds to finance improvements to the Water Treatment Plant.
There was yet another close call at the Mason City Municipal Airport last week. A Mason City pilot escaped injury after part of his plane’s landing gear collapsed when he was landing at the airport.
State Rep. Gary Blodgett has announced he will seek re-election to the Iowa House of Representatives in District 19.
It took Central School students just 10 days to raise over $5,800 for a classmate and friend in need. Students in grades four to six sold cookie dough to raise funds for Dustin Palmer, a sixth grader who is currently undergoing treatment for bone cancer at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn.
Philomena Ann Schnoebelen was born Feb. 25, 1998, to Randy and Caroline Schnoebelen, of Clear Lake.

Clear Lake V.F.W. Post 4868 Auxiliary announced the winners in the “I Love America” essay contest. Local winners included Logan Rogers, Al Prickett, Ellie Kessler, Bethany Schwichtenberg, Ashley Hesley, Colin Shepp, Justin Verhalen, Luke Peters and Kelly Kruckenberg.
The Barrel Drive-In is now open for the season.
Bernie Saggau, executive director of the Iowa High School Athletic Union, will be the keynote speaker at the Parenting Fair, sponsored by Clear Lake Schools.
Mike Maulsby, president of Clear Lake Boats, and Bob Kopriva, president of Hanson Marine, have announced a sales agreement has been reached between the two companies. The agreement provides for the sale of Hanson Marine’s boat sales and service to Clear Lake Boats, and the storage portion of Clear Lake Boats business to Kopriva.
Andy Thompson accomplished his ultimate goal by becoming the Class 2A 125 pound State wrestling champion. He capped a perfect 39-0 season with the championship. Clear Lake finished in a tie for third place at the State wrestling tournament. Also wrestling were Dustin DenHartog, who placed third; Mike Lester; Jeramy Viet and Ryan Baack.
Hampton-Dumont topped the Clear Lake boys, 65-62 in the postseason opener,
After a long and hard season, the Ventura boys hung up their jerseys. A victory Monday night against AP put the Vikings in the District quarterfinals against Woden-Crystal Lake/Titonka. A 72-58 loss ended their tournament hopes. Ventura ended the season with an overall record of 10-11.

February 1973
The Ventura girls basketball team (27-1) worked their way up to the Regional Tournament by defeating Woden-Crystal Lake, Klemme and Titonka. They overpowered Northwood and Lakota in the District. Rockford, ranked fourth in the state, ended their State Tournament hopes by defeating the Vikings, 86-72, in the Regional Tournament at Mason City.
Three Clear Lake wrestlers competed in the State Wrestling Tournament. Dick Erickson competing at 167 lbs. did the best of Coach John Klaudt’s representatives, taking third place. Also at the tournament was Joel McChesney and Bob Erickson.

It happened again! Our news pictures for this week got waylaid someplace. So we’ll just have to tell you about the window that got blown out in the National Tea Store in the windstorm Thursday.
Karen Heinrich, Floy Baumgartner and Myrna Reynolds participated in a special dance during entertainment at a dinner party held by the Junior Chamber of Commere at All Veteran’s Center.
Mrs. Clair Davis gave a comparison of butter and oleo margarine as the lesson for Neotera Club at the home of Mrs. Keith Raw. Mrs. Hyle Lowman read an article on “New Mystery Cakes” and Mrs. B.A. Morse showed films on meat.

Next Friday is Corn Day in Clear Lake. On that day the Clear Lake Commercial Club, through the Corn Exchange Bank, will pay 25¢ a bushel for ear corn.
Phillip Furleigh has leased what is known as the Pitsor oil station.
Thorkel Sondrol, while ice boating Sunday evening, collided with another ice boat. Sondrol received a long, severe scalp wound and a broken third finger on his right hand. No one else was injured.
The remains of the White Pier are being removed. George Peterson, who bought the lumber, has been doing the work.
Sam Kennedy plans on putting in about the same crop acreage as last year: 60 acres of beets; 60 of cabbage; 70 acres of onions; 165 acres of potatoes; 60 acres of soybeans and 40 acres of alfalfa.
