Cerro Gordo County Supervisors have set the date for a bid letting for construction of a multi-use trail along the south side of Clear Lake.
Supervisor Chairman Casey Callanan explained that the county intends to use federal Destination Iowa grant money to connect as many bicycle trails as possible within Cerro Gordo County.
The proposed trail on 235th Street will connect the Sisters Prairie trail to Dogwood Avenue by creating a designated oversized shoulder on the north side of the road.
Callanan explained the county had hoped to secure an easement through property now controlled by the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, however such a project was listed as prohibited as part of the transfer of the property from the late Max Clausen to the INHF.
The engineer’s estimate for the project is approximately $500,000. The cost would be covered with a 60:40 split between Cerro Gordo County and the Destination Iowa funds. The county would be responsible for 60 percent of the total cost.
Callanan explained the project will involve building up the ditch on the north side of the road to allow for a wider bike lane. Rumble strips will also be included as a safety measure.
“It’s not perfect, however given the circumstances I’m excited we can do something to help make cycling a little safer while riding around the lake. This has been discussed for many years, and I’m glad the opportunity arose,” said Callanan.
Bid letting for the project will be April 17.
