Beth Ann Schumacher has announced her candidacy for a seat on the Clear Lake City Council in the upcoming November election.
Schumacher said she has not yet made a decision of whether she will run for an at-large position, or as representative for the Third Ward.
Terms for the at-large position currently held by Mike Callanan, as well as the Third Ward seat held by Gary Hugi and First Ward seat held by Mark Ebeling will expire Dec. 31, 2023.
“My parents instilled in me the importance of public service and I would like to continue my passion for community involvement by serving Clear Lake as a member of our City Council,” stated Schumacher. “I believe that I possess the skills and experience to provide a positive contribution to Clear Lake as a City Council person.”
Schumacher grew up in Clear Lake and was a high school social studies teacher at Clear Lake High School, retiring in 2015 after 35 years of teaching. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and political science from the University of Northern Iowa, a Master of Arts degree in history from the University of Northern Iowa and additional graduate hours in Civil War studies from Virginia Tech. She currently is the president, archivist and education coordinator at the Clear Lake Historical Society.
“As an historian, I firmly believe in the importance of keeping an eye on our past aswe forge ahead. I was excited to be a part of the restoration project of Clear Lake’s Seawall now to be included in the historical research phases of the Surf District,” Schumacher said. “The lake has drawn people for centuries and should be protected, enhanced and cherished. Our community’s history, culture and heritage are a major part of what makes Clear Lake a destination and must be safeguarded. I look forward to introducing myself to the community more fully during the fall campaign and I would appreciate your vote in November.”
