The Clear Lake girls golf team had a solid week, despite the conditions not being as nice as the first week of the season.
CL 182, WC 220
On Tuesday, April 18, the Lions traveled Webster City. The teams were competing at Briggs Woods Golf Course, which Coach Colby Andrews explained featured a more difficult layout than Webster City Links, which is where the Lynx usually play.
The coach said the course was in great condition and it was a little bit windy, but the Lions prevailed in the first conference dual of the year, 182-220. Meghan and Rebecca DeLong took first and second place with scores of 39 and 40. Macey Holck shot a 50 and Lily James was the fourth scorer with a 53.
“I thought we played pretty well considering none of the girls had ever played the course before,” said Andrews.
Toni Dickey Invitational
On Thursday, the team traveled to Ankeny to play Otter Creek at the Toni Dickey Hawekette Invitational.
“This has been a great experience for the girls to play in the past couple of years. It is a State golf course and against much bigger 4A schools in the Des Moines area. It also has a State feel to it, with the number of schools at the tournament.
There were 12 different schools at the tournament this year. The Lions finished as runner-up to Southeast Polk. The Rams carded a stellar 337, while the Lions came in with a 354.
“The weather was horrendous, to say the least,” said Coach Andrews. “There was an hour and 15-minute rain delay to start the morning. They had to push the water off the greens before we could head out. There was a lot of standing water on the course and the girls got a free drop out of all the bunkers. It was nice for a couple of holes and then another pop-up rain came through and brought a ton of wind with it. This made for a very cold and miserable afternoon. The girls however persevered through the elements and put forth a gritty round.”
Meghan DeLong shot an 80, which was tied for second, however she ended up getting third with the card back. Rebecca DeLong placed fifth with an 82. Meagan Paine and Macey Holck each shot 96 to round out Clear Lake’s scoring.
I was extremely pleased with how we played given all the elements thrown at them during the round. This was our first 18-hole test of the year, it was great to see them play a decent round in extremely windy and wet conditions,” said Andrews. “We have been playing some really good golf to start the season and we are looking to build on the early success.”
