Excitement is growing for the Everybody Plays Playground under construction on South 15th Street. Recently, a 50-foot double zip-line feature was added to the park scape, thanks to a $25,000 contribution from the Harman Family Charitable Trust.
According to Creighton Schmidt, director of finance and administrative services for the city, the Harman family has been coming to Clear Lake for many years and some members of the family now permanently reside here.
“They have taken an active interest in many of the community betterment projects and initiatives of late,” said Schmidt. “City Administrator Scott Flory worked through the charitable trust application and request process.”
The zip-line had originally been bid as an alternate to the playground project, however Flory told the City Council that the gift, along with approximately $7,000 which the initial Everybody Plays Playground Committee had raised, will cover the cost of the featue. He recommended the City contribute the cost of installation.
City Council members agreed.
“We are very grateful for the financial contributions and personal interest in the Everybody Plays Park & Inclusive Playground Project, as well as many other community improvements,” Flory added.
Inclusive playgrounds are designed to provide children and families of all physical, mental and social abilities and ages an opportunity to play together in a sensory-rich environment without barriers that traditionally exist on a playground.
The playground under development here incorporates a large green area next to the playground, various shaded areas and a splash pad. All are adjacent to the City’s outdoor swimming pool. The zip line will be located near the north area of the park.
