Lightning delayed play in the first half and the match between Clear Lake and Garner-Hayfield-Ventura was ultimately cancelled Monday, May 8, with the Lions ahead, 2-1.

“We came out at the start a little sluggish and slow and allowed GHV to get a couple good shots on goal,” said Coach Zach Hall.

The Lions started to get into the game and were able to get two goals in from Travaughn Luyobya, assisted by Kinnick Clabaugh and Andrew Korenberg, before the game was delayed by lightning with 12 minutes left in the first half.

CL 10, B-K 0

The Lions got off to a better start Thursday, May 11, and stayed strong in a 10-0 victory over Belmond-Klemme.

“We were organized from the start, putting pressure on BK and getting good shots on goal,” said Coach Hall.

Within five-minutes the Lions were ahead 3-0 with a goal from Leo Tolentino and two goals from Travaughn Luyobya.  They added three more goals in the first half that they dominated offensively.  Kinnick Clabaugh put two goals in the net and Andrew Korenberg scored one.

The Lions took their foot off the gas a bit in the second half, but were still able to get the four goals needed to end the game early on the 10 goal mercy rule.

Scoring in the second half was Andrew Mixdorf, Kinnick Clabaugh and Andrew Korenberg. The Lion defense had another solid performance for their second shutout of the season.

Final stats on the night showed Luyobya with two goals and three assists; Adrian Ros had one assist; Clabaugh, three goals, one assist;, Korenberg, three goals, one assist; Mixdorf, one goal, one assist; Weston Conway, one assist.

The following night the Lions seemed to be tired with heavy legs, according to their coach.  They turned in a lackluster and frustrating first half where we had a hard time getting anything going offensively.

Hampton-Dumont was able to score two goals in before Weston Conway had a nice, one touch goal to get his team back to 2-1 at half.

The second half was much better, as far as effort and purpose, when the Lions had the ball, said their coach.

“We drew a foul in the box that Andrew Korenberg was able to convert,” said Hall.

The penalty kick tied the game up at 2-2 eight-minutes into the second half.

The game was back and forth for most of the second half before the Lions gave up a free kick deep in their end with seven-minutes left in the game. The Bulldogs scored to go ahead, 3-2, and went on to win, 5-2.

The Lions ended the regular season tied for second in Class 2A in goals scored (73), fourth in assists (47), fourth in points (193), fourth in shots (325), first in shots on goal (194) and third in corner kicks (90).
