The Clear Lake Lions baseball team (13-13) played Algona (16-14) in the Class 3A Region 2 tournament, losing the game on Friday, July 7 by a score of 6-3. The loss eliminates the Lions from the tournament and ends their season.
Algona was first on the board, scoring three runs in the second inning. Clear Lake countered at the bottom of the second with two runs. The Bulldogs went up three more runs at the top of the third, while the Lions scored another run at the bottom of the third, it would be a stalemate the rest of the way.
“We had our struggles at the plate with men on base against Algona, as we only had two hits in the game,” said Clear Lake Head Coach A.J. Feuerbach. “The Lions never quit and fought until the end to keep it close.”
The Lions had two hits for singles, two RBIs, and were walked six times. The Bulldogs had nine hits for singles and six RBIs.
Titan Schmitt went one-for-two with a single, two walks, and scored a run. Schmitt also stole two bases. Luke Fuhrman went one-for-three with a single, an RBI, and a run. Ben Loge also scored and took two walks. He also hit an RBI. Tate Garman stole two bases.
Andrew Theiss threw 111 pitches against 27 batters for seven hits, six runs, two walks, one hit batter, and five strikeouts. Hudson Carney threw 28 times against six batters for three strikeouts.
“We wish nothing but the best to our two departing seniors Ben Loge and Zeke Nelson. This is a very young team with ability. With some hard work preparing for next season, they will be ready to challenge for an NCC title and beyond,” said Coach Feuerbach.
