It was a busy weekend in Clear Lake with the annual Lions Chicken BBQ and the Clear Lake Antique & Classic Boat Show.
The Boat show was held on Saturday, July 15, with many beautiful wooden boats on display at the downtown seawall. A boat cruise was also part of the fun.
The Lions Chicken BBQ fundraiser was held in City Park on Sunday, July 16. Over 4,000 people were served the famous chicken dinner. Grilling and preparation begins early at 3 a.m. and takes many volunteers.
“The event was very successful,” said Dave Fritz, secretary of the Lions Club. “We had a lot of support and help from various groups, including the Boy Scouts, the youth group from the Catholic Church and the Clear Lake girls basketball team.”
The drive-thru has become a popular option for pick-up, with 50 percent of the dinners being delivered by this method.
The question of the day was “where were the beans?” This year a cookie was substituted for the baked beans.
“The Department of Health’s guidelines stated that the temperature of the beans needs to be kept at a constant and we just can’t sustain that temperature,” said Fritz. “The beans were also a lot of work. The cookie is much easier and less messy.”
