The Clear Lake School Board will meet on Monday, Aug. 3, to act on a bid to purchase the three acre tract of land at the Central School property. The school district received just one bid. An Iowa City development firm submitted a bi of $225,000 for the property with plans to construct a 30-unit senior housing complex on the north end of the tract of land. Ten, single family housing lots would be sold off by the developer and a three-quarter acre green space would be given to the city under the proposal.
Ron Andrews has announced he will seek a fourth term on the Clear Lake School Board.
The ballots are in and Clear Lake’s Surf Ballroom has been named as a 1998-99 inductee to the Iowa Rock ’N Roll Hall of Fame. The Surf will be admitted into the Hall of Fame under the category, “Classic Iowa Ballrooms.”
The Clear Lake Noon Lions hosted another successful chicken barbecue on July 19.
Five area students returned from a three-week performance tour of Europe, representing Iowa’s Ambassadors of Music, a select group of instrumental and vocal musicians. These outstanding vocalists performed in concert and traveled through England, France, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Italy, Austria and Germany. The students included Josh Smith, Alison Gross, Peter Norris, Andrea Miller and Matthew McNamara.
Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Adam Turnbull was the only cadet selected from Iowa State University, Army ROTC, to receive the Governor’s Cup Award at an awards ceremony in Des Moines. He has maintained a 4.0 GPA for all four years at ISU. He will serve one year in Germany or Korea, then plans to attend graduate school and eventually work for the FBI.
Payton Power Tumblers received awards at Nationals. Those receiving awards include Megan Smith, Breanna Pleggenkuhle, Jessica Hale, Jill Bowman and Jessica Gunsallus.
The Clear Lake softball team ended its regular season with its 35th straight win. The team defeated Mason City, 8-1. Sarah Tompkins, whose season batting average is now .417 went 3-4 to lead the Lions. Kristin Keefe pitched the game. She allowed three total hits and struck out eight Mohawk batters.
The Clear Lake baseball team fell short in its bid to return to State. Forest City ended Clear Lake’s season in a 12-7 contest. The majority of Clear Lake’s pitching staff saw action in the game, as Nate Carney started, and Jeff Hall, Joe Scribbins and Jeff Marsh also pitched during the game. Clear Lake finished the season with an overall record of 10-15.

Pasquale’s Pizzeria, 538 Highway 18 W., opened for business Saturday. Owned and operated by Ronald Reitmeier, the business is one of four in Iowa affiliated with the Humboldt-based Pasquale Food Inc. The pizzeria serves pizza, spaghetti and meat balls, sausage sandwiches, tap beer and soft drinks.
With perfect weather and a steady flow of customers during the afternoon, the Lions Club’s annual chicken barbecue was considered highly successful, serving nearly 3,000.
Iowa Falls defeated the Clear Lake Lions varsity baseball team, 3-0. The game put the Lion’s conference record at 5-8. Dick Erickson had the only hit for the Lions. The team was also defeated by the Mason City Mohawks, 3-1, later in the week. Bob Erickson had a double and Tim Esbeck came up with the only run.

The water level as of last Saturday was two and one-half feet below the weir.
Plans for community service projects and arrangements for the observance of Oil Progress week next October were discussed at the meeting of Clear Lake Oil Men at Halford’s Cafe. Tom Nelson Jr., chairman, of the Clear Lake Oil Information committee, led the meeting.

State authorities have taken cognizance of the growing disrespect for the Sabbath as evidenced by Sunday dances. Notice has been given that Saturday dances will end promptly at midnight and will not be tolerated on Sunday.
The law is no respecter of persons, neither is the speed cop. Last week a clergyman from Cerro Gordo County was fined for speeding.
Crane’s Riding Academy moved from Robinson’s Livery Stable to the Oaks Garage.
The Etzel Drug Company has installed an electrical iceless ice cream cabinet, the latest thing in that line made, and the only one in northern Iowa.
Now is the time to fill your bin with good coal. The price is low at Woodford Wheeler Lumber Company.
All of the rural mail carriers now have autos and all of them are thus able to make their trips and reach home about noon.
