August 1998

Clear Lake water quality is under investigation.  The Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health is participating in an epidemiological investigation relating to a case of a child becoming ill with Escherichia coli (E. Coli), serotype 0157:H7.  A nine-year-old boy has been diagnosed with E. Coli infection.  His parents believe he became ill after swimming in Clear Lake two to three weeks ago.  They feel it was from coming in contact  with fecal matter left over from the dumping of 250,000 gallons of raw sewage into the lake June 20-21.  Signs have been posted at McIntosh Woods State Park and Clear Lake State Park warning beach users of high levels of fecal coliform and E. Coli bacteria discovered during testing July 31.  The beach at McIntosh State Park has been closed, while the Clear Lake State Park beach remains open with advisories posted.

The Clear Lake School Board took another step forward toward the sale of the Central School property for senior housing and single family housing development.

Katie Monson, four-year-old daughter of Karen and David Monson, of Clear Lake, was crowned Little Miss North Iowa Fair at a pageant held the opening day of the fair.  Monson was awarded a ribbon and crown after winning the title.

Jason and Stacie Heitland, of Clear Lake, proudly announce the birth of their daughter, Josie Elizabeth Heitland, born on Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998.  She is the couple’s first child.

The C.L.A.S.S. Car Club hosted their 14th Annual Car Show over the weekend.  The event was the biggest and best ever, according to organizers. Saturday, 266 cars were displayed at the Surf Ballroom for a free public show.

Mary Jane Cutshaw, of Louisburg, Kan., was a $10,000 lottery ticket winner at the Clear Lake Kum & Go.

Nine Clear Lake softball players recently received All-North Central Conference honors.  Kristin Keefe and Anna Teigland were both named as unanimous First Team selections.  Sarah Tompkins and Liz Jaben were also First Team selections.  Kristle Wolcott, Brandi Halsne and Kimberly Bacon were named to the Second NCC Team.  Rachael Handeland and Steph Eliasen received Honorable Mention recognition.

Five Clear Lake baseball players and two members of the Lady Vikes softball team have earned All-North Star Conference honors.  Will Pueggel, Jared Ringus and Tom Menke were all named to the First Team.  Luke Brager and Josh Dillavou earned Honorable Mention picks.  Emily Hiscocks and Crystal Richardson received Honorable Mention status for the softball team.

August 1973

A new business, the Eddy True Value Home Center, will open about Nov. 1 in Ed Thornberg’s Maplewood Addition, Highway 18 W.  The firm will be located in a 10,000 square foot building, according to Mike Eddy, Dave Voss and Glenn B. Eddy.

Richard C. James, 37, announced the purchase of the Osthus Funeral Home, 314 N. 7th St.  

The filing of papers by Clear Lake rural residents, brings a total of five candidates vying for the Clear Lake School Board.  Candidates include Mrs. Braden (Betty) Richardson, Roger Amosson, Donald Neuberger, Jr., David Okerlund and Mrs. Melvin (Phyllis) Ferrier.

Rich Chapman, of Clear Lake, is listed on the North Basketball Team for the Iowa Shrine All-Star Football and Basketball games next month.

Playing at the Lake Theatre is “Beyond Atlantis,” starring John Ashley, Patrick Wayne Leigh Christian and George Nader.

 

70 Years Ago

July 1953

The Grand Opening of Amy Lou’s Fashion Center will be held Aug. 15-16, with the awarding of gifts in the evening.

Del Mully left Tuesday night to attend coaching school at Madison, Wis.

Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Miles will observe their Silver Wedding Anniversary on Sunday at their home.  Friends and neighbors are invited to call between the hours of 2 and 4 and 7 to 9 to give them their congratulations on this milestone.

Roger Choate, who has been attending the military training school at Omaha the past few months, came Friday and will spend the remainder of the summer with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Choate.

 

95 Years Ago

August 1928

Edwin Ebaugh will have occasion to remember the miniature twister that came down Bell Street Monday afternoon.  Trees were blown down and shrubbery mangled.  A limb was torn from a tree in the G.D. Worden yard, striking Mr. Ebaugh on the head, cutting a gash which required medical attention.  Mrs. Ebaugh was also struck and knocked down by the impact.

E.R. Adams has purchased the grocery store on East Main Street, operated by Mrs. Venice Lauritzen for the  past few weeks.

Mrs. O.J. King invited 15 little boys and girls to her home to celebrate the joint birthday party of her daughter, Betty Jane, and son, Jack, which occurred July 29 and 30.   Dolls and rubber balls were given as favors.
