The Clear Lake School Board voted 4-1 Monday night to sell the Rental School property to an Iowa City developer for $225,000. In addition to its bid for the property, Clear Lake IHA Senior Housing Limited will contribute up to $100,000 for the demolition of the school building.
School elections will simply be an exercise in civic duty on Tuesday, Sept. 8, for Clear Lake and Ventura School District voters. In each district, two incumbents are unchallenged in re-election bids. In Clear Lake Ron Andrews and Joel Secory will seek re-election and in Ventura, Larry Eichmeier and Marcia McNulty will seek re-election.
Two of Clear Lake’s three public beaches are open following tests for bacteria counts. City Beach and the beach at Clear Lake State Park are open, while McIntosh Woods State Park is closed.
The Clear Lake Woman’s club has announced it will hold its annual Tour of Homes and first meeting on Sept. 8. The $8 tour fee includes visiting 1102 North Shore Drive (the Pyramid House), 15347 Bayside Court and 1519 North Shore Drive.
An Emotional Healing Seminar with the Rev. Jack Frosh will be held at Agape Christian Family Church.
Clubs featuring news in the “Club News” section include: Library Reading Club, Sons of Norway, Stepping Forward, Clear Lake Woman’s Club and North Iowa Quilter’s Guild.
Playing at the Surf Ballroom is Frankie Valli and The Four Season on Sept. 12. Ticket prices are $25. America will perform on Oct. 3, for $18 a ticket.
Eight returning senior letter winners are expected to provide the Ventura football program with solid leadership and a substantially improved record in 1998. Among those expected to have leadership roles this season are Jared Ringus, Tom Menke, Scott Eichmeier, Eric Hapin, Adam Cash, Eric Morf, Brandon Durtschi, Josh Dillavou and Jack Hyde.
Lion fans will get their first glimpse of a “new” Lions Field when Clear Lake plays its first football game on Friday. In addition to the press box that was build just a few years ago, the field will also boast a new “high-tech” scoreboard and turf that Coach Fred Wieck described as the best the field has had in his 10 years of coaching. Returning starters from last year at Tim Secory, Jeff Marsh, Mike Lester, Dustin DenHartog, Adam Hanley, Shane Roenfanz, Sean Olson and Jeff Hall.
Playing at the Lake Theatre is “The Mask of Zorro.” Ticket prices are $3 for adults and $2 for 12 and under.
Celebrate after the game at Java Island, 407 Main Ave., Clear Lake. The business offers hot coffee, beverages, sandwiches and desserts. Desserts include cakes, cheesecakes, torts, baklava and crumb cake.

Hiroaki (Hiro) Ohasi is one of 41 Japanese teachers spending two weeks in Iowa visiting schools to learn more about the American system of education. While here, Ohashi is the guest of Fred Wilson, speech, English and drama instructor at Clear Lake High School. Wilson resides at the Vin Minette home, 401 N. 3rd St., and Ohasi has a room there also.
We didn’t think it could happen here. But it has. We are short of newsprint. That’s the paper that the Mirror-Reporter is printed on. Prospects for the immediate future are not bright. Paper saving actions will need to be taken and your hometown newspaper may look a bit different.
The Ventura FFA-Vocational Agricultural Mechanics team composed of Tom Boehnke, Marion Heintz and Steve Cash received a Gold at the third annual Iowa Vo-Ag-FFA Ag. Mechanics Contest held at the Iowa State Fair.

Mrs. Bob Roseland, who has been in the Lutheran hospital in Des Moines, since Aug. 30, ill with polo is improving slightly. Mrs. Roseland had been recovering satisfactorily last week, but suffered a setback over the Labor Day weekend and became paralyzed. She now has improved and is able to move quite well.
Mr. Ludvig Wandberg entered Mercy Hospital on Monday and had surgery on Tuesday. His condition is reported as good.
James Jorgenrud, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Jorgenrud, Clear Lake, has completed the requirements for the degree of M.A. in teaching at Harvard University. During the coming year he will be sixth grade teacher in the public schools of Groton, Mass.

The North Iowa Fair closed Friday night without a single drunk being seen on the grounds all week. Who says prohibition doesn’t work?
On Thursday an unsuccessful attempt was made to rob the Rogers Hotel. No one was in the office or the lobby at the time.
Eight farmers in the south part of Union township have purchased a threshing unit.
Corn is growing fine, but the question is, will it have time to grow and mature. We have no desire for Jack Frost until Oct. 1.
Everrett Paulson has rented the Anderson Garage building and will take possession Sept. 1.
Sondrol’s has ladies felt bedroom slippers for only 98¢.

Lazy Daisy Pie
(Recipe from 1973)
1 unbaked pie shell
1.8 tsp. salt
3 eggs, separated
1/2 cup butter
pecans
2 cups buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 cups sugar
5 Tbsp. flour.
Cream butter, sugar. Add salt, vanilla, buttermilk, egg yolks. Add flour, beat well. Beat egg whites until stiff and fold in. Pour into the pie shell. Sprinkle with pecans. Bake on second rack from bottom at 375 degrees for 15 minutes, then at 325 degrees for 30 minutes longer. Cool quickly.
