The Clear Lake City Council will meet on Monday to consider a resolution of necessity for sanitary sewer line installation to serve 50 households in the East Main area.
The Clear Lake City Council voted to send a zoning request for the Central School property to the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission for a recommendation. The P&Z will set a hearing date for a request by Clear Lake IHA Senior Housing Limited to develop a senior housing complex on the site. Ten single-family lots would also be part of the development. Those lots would be sold by the Clear Lake Economic Development Corporation for owner-occupied housing. A green space buffer between the senior housing complex and homes would be given to the city as a small park.
Clear Lake Mayor Kirk Kraft informed the City Council that the city’s intention to demolish a Clear Lake home declared a public health and safety hazard has been delayed. The home is located at 1305 N. 5th St.
Carroll Anderson has had the thrill of meeting and introducing literally hundreds of big-time entertainers to music fans. But Labor Day weekend, it was Anderson’s time to be in the spotlight, as the former Surf Ballroom manager was inducted into the Iowa rock ’N Roll Hall of Fame. The Surf Ballroom was also admitted into the Hall under the category, “Classic Ballrooms.”
Three Clear Lake Fire Department probationary firefighters received permanent active status. Julie Anderson, Dean Mosher and Joel Sasse have been training for the past six months and now have full ranking in their department.
Sterling and Cindy Washburn, of Clear Lake, will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary.
Navy Fireman Nicholas J. Iverson, son of Gregory and Alice Iverson, of Clear Lake, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
The Clear Lake football team withstood a late Humboldt Wildcat charge to win the game, 36-29.
Despite a couple of key injuries, the Clear Lake cross country team turned in a strong performance in the Lions’ own invitational. The boys finished fifth and the girls placed seventh. April Wilhem set the pace for the girls with a seventh place finish. Nate Otis led the boys with a 10th place finish.
The Clear Lake volleyball team topped Garrigan and Hampton-Dumont in action last week. According to coach Dale Ludwig, Alissa Grell and Rachael Handeland led the team. Ludwig also praised the play of Amanda Jennings and Kristin Keefe.
Ventura’s Brent Ausborn was the lone runner for the Venture across country team, but he made the most of it. Ausborn placed 20th at the Clear Lake Invitational and 15th at the Garner meet.

September 1973
A meeting to discus the possibility of obtaining a community swimming pool will be held at the Municipal Building. A committee of interested Clear Lake citizens is sponsoring the meeting.
Mr. and Mrs. R.G. Stebbins, of Bayside, have received word that their son, Don, has been assigned to the Secret Service detail protecting Presidential Advisor, Dr. Henry Kissinger. Agent Stebbing, has been with the U.S. Secret Service for four years.
The Clear Lake football team cruised past Iowa Falls, 33-22 Friday night.
Clear Lakers Cindy Ostrander and Jacque Hanes, have been named cheerleaders for all NIACC events for the 1973-74 seasons.
A crowd of about 1,500 persons attended the Farmer’s Fall Festival Appreciation Dance at the Surf.

Paul Kutzner, Cecil Coe and Max Christensen returned Thursday night from Canada where they got their limit in ducks and geese.
Miss Barbara Gilquist, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B.T. Gilquist, will be crowned Homecoming queen Friday evening at halftime of the football game. Barbara, a senior, was chosen last week by the “C” Club, boy’s athletic organization, to reign over the Homecoming festivities. Her attendants will be Dixie Darrow, and Susan Merriman, both juniors.
Dedication services of the new Zion Lutheran Parish Hall will be held Sunday Sept. 27, at 2:30 p.m.
The Clear Lake Homecoming festivities were dampened by Webster City who beat the Lions, 26-13. Barbara Gilquist was crowned Homecoming queen. Her attendants were Susan Merriman and Dixie Darrow.

George Watkins had the front of his restaurant painted. It looks very nice.
Young Billy Ballentyne thinks the world is a pretty rough place. Two weeks ago a mule kicked him and broke his arm, and then last Saturday while at play he ran into a barbed wire fence and cut an ugly gash in his forehead which required several stitches.
There are now 13 million people unemployed and not able to get work.
SCOTCH CAKE BROWNIES
(Recipe from 1973)
2 cups sugar
2 cups flour
1/2 cup shortening
4 tsp. cocoa
1 cup water
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 eggs
1 tsp. soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. vanilla
Mix flour and sugar. Bring shortening, cocoa and water to a boil, add to above and mix well. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Bake 30 minutes and 350 degrees.
