Clear Lake High School students made Kimberly Bacon and Jeremiah Treloar their Homecoming queen and king. The two were crowned in a coronation ceremony Friday afternoon in E.B. Stillman Auditorium. They also presided over Clear Lake’s football victory over Nevada.
The Clear Lake City Council approved a development plan for Lakeland Meadows in a special Council meeting Monday night. The development will occupy approximately six acres of the Lakeland property given to the city in recent years.
After a difficult summer when Clear Lake’s water quality was often called into question, the lake has now been categorized as “impaired” in the Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ report to the federal government. In Clear Lake’s case, the pollutant identified is aquatic plants (algae) and nutrients. The cause of the problem is cited as urban runoff and possibly other unknown sources.
A dedication ceremony will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 11 for the new Clear Creek Elementary School according to Clear Lake Schools Superintendent Mike Teigland. Volunteers are bring sought to help the with move. Trucks, trailers, low flat bed trailers and people willing to help are all needed Oct. 1 and 2.
The Clear Lake Senior Citizen Center is fighting to keep its doors open after experiencing a rash of vandalism, a rise in costs and a delay in expected income from the city.
Hawkeye Power Partners, LLC, Clear Lake, recently held a construction commencement ceremony for the Cerro Gordo County Wind Farm. The project consists of 56 wind turbine generators which will produce about 114 millions kilowatt hours of clean, renewable power – enough to power roughly 20,000 households. Construction has now begun approximately one-half mile north of County Road B-43 and Dogwood Ave.
Interstate Management Corporation will break ground on Iowa’s second Microtel Inn on Wednesday, Sept. 30. The newest Microtel will be located next to I-35 and one mile from the Mason City Airport. A spring 1999 opening is planned.
Bud Madson was honored by officials at the Clear Lake Bakery. Madson is retiring as production manager after 32 years of service to the local industry.
Clear Lake’s “Dominate in ’98” Homecoming theme turned out to be appropriate, as the Lions downed Nevada, 36-14. Ryan Molencamp led Clear Lake with 85 yards rushing. Mike Lester had 840-yards rushing and Tim Secory had 73.
A total team effort lifted the Ventura Vikings to a 14-8 victory over Alden Friday night. The win was the first of the season for Ventura. Jared Ringus scored both Viking touchdowns. The senior had 126 of Ventura’s 170 yards. The Ventura defense was paced by Tom Menke and Scott Eichmeier with 10 tackles apiece.
The Ventura volleyball team split NSC games. The team fell to CAL-Dows, 3-2 and topped SE Webster 3-0. Against SE Webster, Jennifer Orthel was 11/13 serving with six aces. Crystal Richardson was 9/10 six aces and Alicia Peterson was 15/16 with six aces. Cassie Pike had six aces and 12 blocks and Emily Hiscocks had six kills.

The owners of the Surf Convention and Civic Center announced that the facility will cease operations on Dec. 2 and that the property has been listed for sale. The property which consists of a 27,000 sq. ft. building, located on three and one-quarter acres of ground has been operated by the present owners since May 1970. There are no present plans for future use of the property. For over two years the Surf has been managed by Eddie Makar.
Sue Secory was named the 1973 Homecoming Queen. Her attendants were Lauri Halsne, Cindy Usher, Barb Yates, Cindy Vriezlaar, Jeanne Thorson, Karen Klongerbo, Jan Connell, Vicki Amosson and Martha Budolfson.
The special census which was just completed, gives Clear Lake a net gain of 437 persons. The total figure was 6,867, which included three mail-ins.
The Clear Lake cross country squad placed first at the Mason City Invitational. Kurt Goetsch turned in a time of 10:26 to lead the team. He placed sixth Steve Esbeck was 11th and Kevin Ubbelohde was 12th.

Virgil Winnie, who has had a splendid position as secretary in the Pullman Car Company at Omaha, the past year, was obliged to give up his work on account of eye trouble.
Joe Behr and family have been released from quarantine, one of the children having had an attack of diphtheria.
On account of his increasing business L.E. Ashland is planning on building an addition 27×40, to his present store. This will give him ample room for display and to take care of his trade.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ritz went to Mankato where they will run a skating rink for two or three months.
Miss Gracie Suttcliffe was sick in bed on Monday, as the result of swinging on those swings up at the school house on Sunday.

Sam Kennedy has shipped about 30 carloads of vegetables since Aug. 19 and more are being shipped each day.
Wednesday night there will be a debate at the John Miles home, “Horse vs. tractor” will be the debate. J.E. Patterson will uphold the dignity of the horse on Iowa farms, while a tractor representative will give the merits of the machine.
Herbert Watts is starting a grocery store on the corner of east Main and Winnie St. He is offering a 10 lb. pail of coffee for the person submitting the best name for his store.
At the Iowa State Fair 800 babies were entered in the contest. Albers Josyln, of this place, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. A.A. Joslyn won fourth place. She is 16 months old.
FRANKFURTERS OR VIENNA SAUSAGE APPETIZERS
(Recipe from 1973)
1 can condensed tomato soup
2-4 Tbsp. sweet pick relish
1.4 cup chopped onion
1Tbsp. brown sugar
1 Tbsp. vinegar
1 tsp. Worchestershire Sauce
Combine all ingredients. Cover and simmer until onion is cooked and flavor blended. Use 1 pound of meat cut in bite-sized pieces. Add sauce, cover and simmer 20 minutes, stirring often.
