Football team heads to Humboldt Friday

Humboldt is the next stop on the schedule for the Clear Lake Lions as they look to take on the Wildcats (4-3) this coming Friday night.

Clear Lake holds an all-time record of 38-34-2 over the Humboldt Wildcats and in the most recent RPI release, the Lions sit in the top spot, while Humboldt sits at #13. 

The offensive attack of Humboldt is led by junior quarterback Coen Matson who has completed 67-of-110 passes for 853 yards and five touchdowns, while also leading the teams rushing attack with 115 carries for 393 yards and one touchdown.

Matson’s favorite receiver is senior Corey Dettmann who has caught almost half of Matson’s for 419 yards and three scores.

The Wildcats have rushed for a total of 915 yards and average just over four yards per carry and have scored eight touchdowns on the ground.

The defense, is led by Grant Dieleman who has 43 tackles on the season thus far. Humboldt has had success tackling with 416.5 tackles so far this season (compared to Clear Lake’s 291) but they have not been able to get into the backfield, recording only two sacks through seven games and 27 total tackles-for-loss.

The Wildcat defense has recovered two fumbles and have punished opposing quarterbacks with 11 interceptions on the season, including two for touchdowns.

Points after touchdowns are nearly guaranteed for Humboldt as they are perfect on the season, making 16-of-16 attempts.

The Lions, however, are still led by Cael Stephany under center who didn’t throw a lot last week but has passed for 708 yards on 39 completions, seven of which were touchdowns. Stephany has also rushed for 111 yards and one touchdown. 

Junior Titan Schmitt still leads the ground game for Clear Lake, surpassing 1,000’s yards after last game. Schmitt has rushed for 1,020 yards on 172 carries and has scored 12 times.

Thomas Meyer, a junior receiver for the Lions, has caught 19 passes for 335 yards and four touchdowns. 

Defensively, the Lions are led by senior Aidan Hartl who has secured 39 tackles, two sacks and one interception.

Kickoff is scheduled for this Friday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.
