What is RPI and how is it compiled?

You may start to see RPI (Ratings Percentage Index) in the coming weeks, a metric the Iowa High School Athletic Association has used since 2018, for high school football.

The formula is figured by taking your teams winning percentage (37.5%) plus your opponents’ composite winnings percentage  (37.5%) plus your opponents’ opponents’ composite winning percentage (25%).

Last week began the first ratings using RPI which put Clear Lake in second and saw five members of Class 3A District two in the top 15.

Depending on who teams play, the ratings can (and most likely will) change each week.

“It’s going to change every week, it probably changed tonight,” said Clear Lake head coach Aaron Stensland after his win over Hampton-Dumont-CAL. “Five or six teams probably changed tonight. No reason to look at it now, all you can do is win and take care of business on your end.”

On Monday, the newest RPI came out and Clear Lake had moved into the top spot, while Creston was second, just ahead of Solon.
