Colby appointed new Chief of Police

It was a very full house at the Oct. 16 Clear Lake City Council meeting, as friends and family of Interim Chief of Police Mike Colby crowded into the meeting hall to hear Mayor  Nelson Crabb appoint the police captain to the office of Chief.

Prior to moving to Clear Lake with his family, Colby was a 15-year veteran of the Clive, Iowa Police Department. He has served the Clear Lake Police Department in the role of Police Captain since August of 2016 and has served in the role of Interim Police Chief after former Police Chief Pete Roth accepted the same position in Windsor Heights nearly six months ago. City Administrator Scott Flory, whom the Police Chief indirectly reports to, said he has watched Colby create positive working relationships with his officers and civilian support staff, as well as other members of city departments and community organizations. “Mr. Colby brings an appropriate level of skills both academic and on-the-job, that uniquely qualify him for this opportunity. He is an effective communicator with a proven track record as a problem solver and someone who enjoys working with people,” Flory said.

According to the Clear Lake Code of Ordinances, it is the responsibility of the Mayor to appoint the Police Chief, subject to City Council approval.

After his formal appointment to Police Chief by Mayor Nelson Crabb, Colby’s wife Jennifer had the honor of pinning his new stars onto his uniform.
