The Clear Lake Lions competed in the Mason City Volleyball Invitational recently.
The Lions were able to come out ahead with a record of 2-1 throughout the tournament, defeating Central Springs 2-0 and Mason City 2-0, while falling to Osage 2-1.
Osage 2, Clear Lake 1
The Lions were able to pip the Osage Green Devils in the first set, 21-17 but struggled in the next two sets as they fell, 2-1.
Despite the loss, the Lions learned a lot about the team they will meet in the first round of regional play and were able to put up good numbers against the 17-14 Green Devils.
Alivia Paine led the team in assists with 18, while Xada Johnson led the team in kills with 17.
The girls recorded five total blocks with Johnson and Rowan O’Keefe leading the team with two each.
Johnson led the team in digs with 14, while Avery Hegtvedt had seven and Paine recorded six.
The girls were 46-of-48 on serves with three aces.
Paine led the Lions in aces with two and was eight-of-nine from the line.
Ella Landau led the team in serves, going nine-for-10 with an ace.
Clear Lake 2, MC 0
The Lions faced the Mason City Riverhawks (7-24) and came out on top, 2-0.
The Lions were led by Paine in the assists department, while Johnson led the team in kills with 10.
O’Keefe and Madi Ott got in on the kills as well, with Ott recording three and O’Keefe with four.
The Lions recorded seven blocks in the game, led by Johnson with three. Johnson also had seven digs, a team high.
The girls missed five serves on the night, going 34-of-39 but saw four aces, which was once again led by Paine.
Clear Lake 2, CS 0
The Central Springs Panthers (22-9) were up next for the Lions. Clear Lake defeated them by two points in both sets.
Paine, again, led the team in assists with 15, while Johnson took charge in the kills category again with nine.
The Lions recorded six blocks and 29 digs altogether.
Leading the blockers was Ott and Johnson, each with two, while Johnson led the team in digs with 10.
Iowa Falls-Alden
CL 3, IF-A 2
It was a night to be happy about for the Clear Lake volleyball squad as they ended their regular season on a high note with a victory over the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets (10-24).
The Lions had command in the first set, defeating the Cadets 25-10. It looked like it might be a quick night for the Lions.
The Cadets, however, had different plans and after shaking off the 15-point loss in the first set, the Cadets came back to defeat the Lions 25-22 to make it a game.
The Cadets took a 2-1 lead in the game after winning set three after going into extra points, to win by 28-26.
The Lions battled back in the fourth to force a five set game, defeating the Cadets 28-26.
In set five, the Lions were ahead most of the set and defeated the Cadets 15-10.
Alivia Paine led the team in assists with 35, while recording two kills and Xada Johnson ended the night on top with 23 kills on 79 attempts.
The Lion girls had 17 blocks on the night, led by Madi Ott who recorded seven and Rowan O’Keefe who had four.
From the serve line, the Lions missed seven serves, successful on 108-of-115 with five aces.
O’Keefe and Ott each had two aces with Landau recording one and leading the servers with 23-out-of-24 crossing the net.
The Lions took on Osage (18-16) in the first round of regional play on Tuesday, Oct. 17.
The winner advanced to the next round in New Hampton today (Thursday, Oct. 19) at 7 p.m. Results of that game will be in next week’s edition of the Clear Lake Mirror-Reporter.
