It’s hockey season and the Mason City Mohawk hockey team, featuring Clear Lakers Dylan and Brady Bieber and Hudson Carney, hosted the Kansas City Jets this weekend for two games.
The Mohawks and Jets split the weekend with Mason City taking game one on Saturday and Kansas City getting game two on Sunday.
Game 1
Saturday saw the Mohawks score early in the first period off a nice shot by Brayden Pearce with the assists from Kellen Kantaris and Thomas Hubbard before the period ended.
The goal was scored while both Kansas City and Mason City saw players in the penalty box.
To start the second period, the Jets were out to show what they could do and evened the score with a goal by Dayne Kauffmann and assists by Daniel Ignatichev and Isaac Kirby at one with 9:08 to go in the period.
After some back-and-forth and four more minutes off the clock, Kansas City scored another goal, this time by Devan Dorley who was assisted by Lane Wittock and Ayden Goodwin to lead the Mohawks 2-1.
The rest of the period would end without much excitement.
The third period, had plenty of excitement for Kansas City early, before the Mohawks were able to ground the Jets .
Mason City added a goal early in the third with a shot by Pearce and assisted by Kantaris and Bieber, to tie things at two goals each, but Kansas City jumped in early with another goal to go ahead 3-2 before adding two more and leading 5-2.
While the clock ran down, the Mohawks didn’t give up and Clear Lake’s Dylan Bieber scored a goal 9:26 into the third period and was assisted by Pearce and Zack Lloyd.
Down 5-3, Hubbard scored a goal, assisted by Pearce and Bieber to close the gap to one goal.
It looked as though the Mohawks would suffer a loss, Mason City mustered up the offense needed to tie the game with just 29 seconds remaining in the third period after a goal by Pearce and assists by Bieber and Avery Beyer.
After a five minute fourth period that saw no goals, the game went into shootouts.
Kansas City scored their first goal, which was followed by Mason City scoring theirs.
Mason City goalie Jacob Barr, in his first varsity start, stopped the Jets’ second and third attempts while Mason City was able to make the next two, and reaching the three-goal threshold in the shoot out to defeat the Kansas City Jets.
“We knew we had nothing to lose so we might as well put it all on the line,” said Bieber. “We played good in the first period and slowed down in the second but really brought it back in the third.”
In the third period, the Mohawks went all offense and Mason City’s goalie was on the bench, while the Mohawks looked for a goal.
Bieber had high praise for Barr.
“I had to block every shot I could and it’s Barr’s first ever varsity start and he did really good,” said Bieber. “If we clean up that second period it’s not even a game really.”
Game 2
Sunday saw the Jets and Mohawks back on the ice for game two.
Mason City once again came out strong with the first goal coming from Bieber and assisted by Emmett Riley and Pearce on a power play as the Jets had one in the penalty box.
Hudson Carney scored his first goal of the season in game two with assists by Max Lang and Jaxon Bothwell, just one minute after the Mohawks first goal to shock the Jets with a 2-0 first period.
The Jets, though, came back in the second and scored two of their own and held the Mohawks off the board in the full 17 minutes of the second period.
Mason City would take a one goal lead as Pearce scored in the third almost halfway through the third with assists by Kantaris and Bieber.
The Jets, however, scored two more goals in the to end the game up 4-3 on the Mohawks.
Both teams start out the season 1-1.
Next up for the Mohawks is a trip to Des Moines to face the Des Moines Capitals at Bucs Arena on Nov. 4 at 7 p.m.
