The Mason City Mohawks topped the Waterloo Warriors last Friday, Nov. 10 in a game that went 5-2.
The first period saw the match even at its conclusion, but Waterloo came out shooting, scoring off a Jack Rikkers shot that was assisted by Maddox Harn and Dayton Niedert.
Mason City evened the score as Lamar Barragan scored an unassisted goal.
The Mohawks jumped ahead on a Kellen Kantaris goal assisted by Brayden Pearce and Thomas Medlin to go up 2-1 before the Warriors evened the game once more with an Andrew Bushbaum goal that was assisted by Dayton Niedert and Cayden Kutz.
Mason City scored the go-ahead goal 16:18 into the period by Dylan Bieber. The goal was assisted by Pearce and Kantaris.
The third period saw more action from Mason City but Waterloo was stymied and wouldn’t score.
Jaxon Bothwell, of Mason City, scored late in the third to go up 4-2 before Bieber put the game to bed with the fifth goal for the Mohawks and his second of the game.
The Mohawks recorded 30 shots on goal, while Waterloo recorded 22.
Ames 3, Mason City 2
The Mohawks fell to 2-3 on the season in front of a home crowd as they hosted the Ames Cyclones on Saturday, Nov. 11.
Mason City scored first early in the first period on a Brayden Pearce goal assisted by Kellen Kantaris and Dylan Bieber which was also on a power play and the only goal of the first.
The second opened with a Cyclone goal by Reid Jones and assisted by Zach Wilson.
Pearce would put the Mohawks ahead once more with assists by Kellen Kantaris and Thomas Medlin, but it didn’t last long as the Ames Cyclones struck back just 10 seconds later by Zach Wilson and Graffton Linder.
With just seconds remaining in the second period, the Cyclones scored on a power play by Zach Wilson that put Ames ahead 3-2.
The third period was fruitless for both teams and the Cyclones would win, despite only 13 shots on goal to Mason City’s 26.
