Mohawks split games with Blues

MC 4, Capitals 3

The Mason City High School Hockey team hosted the Des Moines Capitals Thursday, Nov. 16.

The Mohawks fell to the Capitals earlier this season 6-2 at the Capitals home arena Nov. 4.

This time, however, the Mohawks were able to take care of business and get the victory over the Capitals by a score of 4-3.

It wasn’t easy for the Mohawks as they had to rally to overcome a 2-0 deficit after the Capitals scored in the first period and then again in the second to put the Mohawks behind.

Jaxon Bothwell put Mason City on the board late in the second period, with just under one minute to go, assisted by Dylan Bieber and Brayden Pearce.

Justin Reams of the Capitals extended their lead over the Mohawks with a goal early in the third period.

With 16 minutes to go in the game, Mason City was down 3-1.

It was a scoring frenzy for the Mohawks after that goal as Avery Beyer scored for Mason City, assisted by Lamar Barragan and then Dylan Bieber tied the game five and a half minutes into the third period with an assist by Kellen Kantaris.

With just over five minutes to go in the contest, Max Lang was able to score the go-ahead and the game winning goal.

Mason City would have 31 shots on goal at the final buzzer, while the Capitals could only muster 11.

The Capitals saw four players in the penalty box, including a 10 minute misconduct penalty, while the Mohawks served three penalties.

Nathan Foster was in the goal for the Mohawks, with eight saves on 11 shots, while the Capitals fielded Jackson Fleming who had a busy day with 27 saves on 31 shots.

MC 4, Quad City 2

The Mohawks hosted the Quad City Blues last weekend, taking the first game, 4-2.

The first period saw no goals made and it wasn’t until the second that Hudson Carney scored for the Mohawks to put them on top with assists from Dylan Bieber and Lane Hansen.

The Mohawks increased their lead just minutes later when Bieber scored on an assist from Kellen Kantaris and Mason City was up 2-0.

The Blues closed the gap when Liam Quinn scored on assists from Bleu Beckwith and Chase DeYoung. 

The third period continued in favor of Mason City as just over three minutes in Tanner Ruehlow scored on assists from Quentin Peterson and Avery Beyer to put the Mohawks ahead 3-1.

There was a lull in the scoring, as the goalies stayed busy, but Brayden Pearce found an opening and scored the Mohawks fourth goal of the contest with an assist from Bieber to put the Mohawks up 4-1.

Brady Huskey scored unassisted for the Quad Cities with 1:36 to go in the game as time ran out and the Mohawks won 4-2.

Quad City 2, MC 0

The next game for the Mohawks didn’t go as well against the Blues as they split the weekend with a second game loss 2-0.

The Blues came back and held the Mohawks scoreless as they scored once in the first period on a John Nienhaus goal assisted by Huskey and Jackson Otten.

The second saw no goals by either team and the third period saw a Beckwith goal with an assist by Nienhaus with 3:49 left in the contest.

Blues goalie, Cody Harkey, had 40 saves on the day and didn’t give up one goal.

Nathan Foster, goalie for the Mohawks, had 24 save attempts, giving up two and saving 22.

The Mohawks will be back home after facing Ames and the Des Moines Oak Leafs in the next couple of weeks, hosting Quad City Dec. 9 and 10.
