The Clear Lake Police Department received an automatic fire alarm call from the Fairfield Inn Hotel, 1401 Bayou Road in Clear Lake, at approximately 12:19 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18. Within moments hotel employees reported a fire on a second floor hallway and the Clear Lake Fire Department (CLFD) was immediately dispatched.
The CLFD responded with one ladder company, two engine companies, two ambulances and one command truck for a total of 14 CLFD personnel. The CLFD was assisted on the scene by the CLPD.
While the alarms were sounding, the Fairfield Inn staff began evacuating hotel guests.
Upon arrival Clear Lake fire fighters searched the second floor and after encountering a smoke-filled hallway they found a smoking trash container, located on a housekeeping custodial cart.
The cart was located directly under the hotel sprinkler system. The fire in the trash container activated the sprinkler head, which put out the fire before the CLFD arrived. The sprinkler system did its job, quickly stopping the spread of the fire.
CLFD crews checked the ceiling for possible extension of the fire and they cleared the second floor of smoke. Once cleared, the hotel staff and guests were allowed to return inside.
The fire remains under investigation. Damage, estimated at $5,000, was contained to the second floor with smoke and water damage from the sprinkler activation.
