The Mason City Police Department received a stolen vehicle report on a 2003 Ford Taurus that was stolen from a Mason City residence on Saturday, Dec. 16, at 9:30 p.m. The vehicle’s description and license plate number was immediately broad casted to surrounding agencies.
A Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s deputy spotted the stolen vehicle near Highway 122 and N. 40th St. in Clear Lake at 9:57 p.m. and a traffic stop was attempted with assistance from the Clear Lake Police Department. When the westbound vehicle refused to stop, a high speed chase ensued on Highway 18 through Clear Lake at a speed of 90 mph.
The driver of the vehicle continued west on Highway 18, reaching speeds of 105 mph as it passed through Ventura and Garner. The vehicle finally stopped at Highway 18 and Palm Avenue in Hancock County where the driver was arrested without incident.
The driver, a juvenile, was not known to be the owner of the stolen vehicle and the vehicle was returned without damage. The juvenile, whose name will not be released at this time, was referred to Juvenile Court Services and charged with 2nd degree theft, a class D felony; eluding, a class D felony; no valid driver’s license; a minor in possession of alcohol; and failure to obey a traffic control device.
The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office was the investigating agency, assisted by the Clear Lake Police Department, Iowa State Patrol CMV Unit, Garner Police Department, Hancock County Sheriff’s Office and the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office.
