The Clear Lake Lion girls hosted the Algona Bulldogs on Dec. 19 and suffered a big loss to the now North Central Conference leaders.

Both teams went into the contest 4-0 in the conference and the Lions now sit one game behind the Bulldogs.

Clear Lake started off with a strong showing, leading the Bulldogs 14-5 early before a strong second quarter push by Algona put the Bulldogs in front by a score of 27-21 at halftime.

The second-half was close, but still favored the visiting team as the home Lions tried to stay in the game.

After three quarters, the Lions trailed by eight points.

The final eight minutes of play saw the Lions continue to fall into a hole.  The Bulldogs took the 57-46 conference victory to put them alone at the top of the North Central Conference.

It was another heartbreaker for the Lions as they traveled to Forest City.The Lions fell behind early and couldn’t stop a high-powered Indian offense.

Clear Lake was held to five points in the first quarter, while Forest City scored 21, putting the Lions in a big deficit.

The Indians continued to score in the second and led 42-17 at halftime.

The Lions saw 27 turnovers in the game as they struggled into the second half, scoring only 16, while the Indians scored 30.

Leading the Lion offense was freshman Taylor Schwenn with nine points, along with Madi Ott and Xada Johnson with eight apiece.

The Lions were led by Johnson in rebounds with nine and Addie Doughan in steals with three.

The Lions head into the break with a record of 5-4 overall and a conference record of 4-1, behind Algona (5-0) and Humboldt (4-1).

The Lions will return Jan. 5 against Iowa Falls-Alden in Iowa Falls.
