Upper Iowa University competed in the 44th annual Midwest Classic in Indianapolis, Ind. which saw Clear Lake High School graduate Eric Faught finish 7-2. Faust finished with three wins against nationally-ranked wrestlers, earning fifth place overall.
Faught (157 pounds) fell in the third round before putting together four straight wins. UNC Pembroke’s Keegan Roberson won by major decision in the consolation semifinals.
Faught won by medical forfeit in the last round where he finished the day at fifth.
How it went
Faught began his day seeded seventh and faced Kyrie Williams of AIC. Faught took the win with a pin in :47 seconds.
His next opponent was Hunter Harris of FHSU. This time, Faught would get the victory by technical fall, winning 17-1 after 4:44.
It was Faught against Guy Deleonardis of GSU next. The battle would see Deleonardis advance with a 9-4 decision over Faught.
Moving into consolation wrestling, Faught faced Owen Cline of CMU. Faught defeated him by a 15-3 major decision.
John Bamvakais of MU was the Upper Iowan athletes next opponent. Faught put together a nice performance to defeat him by a 19-3 technical fall.
Moving on, Faught defeated Will Kuster of DU by an 11-6 decision.
Keegan Roberson was next for the Clear Lake grad.
Roberson defeated Faught 12-3 in a major decision to move into the third place match. Faught went on to battle for fifth.
Faught faced Drew Weichers of AU next. A medical stoppage for Weichers gave Faught the fifth place finish.
