Lion girls back in the win column with victory over Cadets

The Lion girls traveled to Iowa Falls to face the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets last Friday where they began the new year off with a big 66-33 victory.

Xada Johnson, who collected 21 points on the night, led the team in scoring, along with teammate Addie Doughan who scored 14.

Freshman Taylor Schwenn recorded eight.

It was close in the beginning stages, but as the game progressed, the Cadets became more lethargic and Clear Lake ran away with the game.

After the first quarter, the score stood at 12-7 in favor of Clear Lake, but throughout the second quarter, the visiting Lions jumped ahead by 18-points, leading 30-12 at halftime.

The third quarter was the best of the night for the Lions, scoring 22-points, while only allowing six with their stingy defense.

The defense was led by Ayla Johnson who had five steals on the night, while also recording five total rebounds, with three on defense.

Schwenn also recorded five steals on the night and Madi Ott had four takeaways.  As a team the defense recorded 23 steals altogether.

Ashleigh Amble had a nice night under the boards with three blocks, a team high, while also making two buckets herself, on two attempts, to record four points.

By the fourth quarter, the Lion bench had entered with a 52-18 lead.

The fourth saw the Cadets outscore Clear Lake 15-14, but it wasn’t nearly enough as the Lions won 66-33 to improve to 6-4 on the season and third in the North Central Conference standings with a record of 5-1, just behind Algona (8-3, 6-0) and Humboldt (9-3, 5-1).

The Lions shot 40 percent on the night, making 26-of-65 baskets, including seven three-point shots.
