Lions compete in Osage

The Clear Lake Lion girls wrestling team opened up the new year with a trip to Osage for a tournament.

100 – At 100 pounds, Clear Lake’s Avery Williams  faced Maillaynni Green of Bettendorf.

Williams was defeated after double overtime where Green won 3-2, putting Williams into the consolation bracket.

Williams then faced Catherine Orozco of Eagle Grove. Williams came out on top by a close 4-3 decision.

Williams then faced Bailie Hookem of East Buchanan.

The match went into a third overtime and Williams came out on top by a 4-3 decision for seventh place.

110 – At 110 pounds, Clear Lake fielded Shaelyn Ulrich.

Ulrich faced Mariah Michels of Saint Ansgar in a match that saw Ulrich pinned in two minutes.

Ulrich moved into the consolation bracket where she faced Lena Buntemeyer.

Ulrich was able to get the pin over Buntemeyer in 3:10.

It was now Madeline Cornish of Mason City up for Ulrich.

The match lasted 4:32 and Ulrich was pinned to end her day.

115 – At 115 pounds, the Lions fielded Saphira Olsen as she took on Emma Lennie of Nevada.

Olsen made quick work of her opponent, getting the pin in :47 seconds to go on to face Kaitlyn Krum of East Buchanan.

Krum was able to get by Olsen, pinning her in 2:22 to put her into the consolation bracket to battle for a third place finish.

Olsen’s next opponent was Mason City’s Averi Peterson.

Olsen fell to Peterson in :49 seconds.

Olsen wasn’t finished yet, however, as she went on to face Nevada’s Ashlyn Leslie.

Leslie got the pin in :36 seconds to end Olsen’s day.

125 – Pieper Lester was up next for the Lions and faced Madison Allmon of Lewis Central.

Lester defeated Allmon by fall in 1:10 and faced Destiny Hoeppner of Cedar Falls next.

The match lasted 2:50 with Hoeppner getting the pin over Lester.

The Clear Lake sophomore next faced Taylor Moser of Central Elkader.

Moser proved to be too much, defeating Lester 9-1 in a major decision.

Moving into the next phase of the tournament, Lester faced Osage’s Emma Evens.

After a match that went 3:21 with Lester getting the pin, Lester faced Sammi Isham of East Buchanan for seventh place.

Lester came out on top with a pin over Isham in 3:18 to take seventh.

145 – At 145 pounds, Clear Lake’s Alexa Heflin  faced Lila Reints of Aplington Parkersburg (AP-GC). 

Heflin came out on top  after a long match that lasted six minutes and ended in a Heflin pin. 

Arianna Vesey of Bettendorf was next for the Clear Lake freshman and another long match saw Heflin get the pin after five minutes.

Heflin faced Addy McGraw of Alburnett. Heflin dominated with a major decision of 12-0.

Heflin faced Gracie Leslie of Nevada for first place.

The match was one to watch, going 5:37.

After the first period, Heflin led 3-2 but the second period saw Leslie with a take down and a couple of near falls, collecting eight points to defeat Heflin 10-4 to take first place and Heflin taking second.

155 – At 155 pounds, Clear Lake’s Gracey Smith faced Humboldt’s Elsie Hubbell.

Smith battled Hubbell for 1:18 and got the pin to move on to face Kylie Iverson of Emmetsburg.

Iverson defeated Smith by a 5-2 decision and Smith would face Aubrey Chapman of Osage next.

Smith lost to Chapman by a 3-2 decision and  moved into the consolation round.

Smith was put up against Mia Reichart of Nevada. Smith defeated the Nevada sophomore pinning her in 1:54 to face Nashua-Plainfield’s Nevaeh Bloker.

Smith and Bloker battled for seventh place.  Smith edged out Bloker in a 4-3 decision to finish the day in seventh.

170 – At 170 pounds, the Lions fielded three wrestlers with Kayma Burleson, Karlea Monson and Zoe Koontz.

Burleson began the day with a victory over Alburnett’s Zoe Steen, getting the pin in a quick :14 seconds.

Next up for Burleson was Cedar Falls’ Kirstyn Cotcher.

After a battle of 2:58, Burleson moved on after pinning Cotcher. Burleson met her match in the next bout when facing Aleah Eichenberger of New Hampton-Turkey Valley (NHTV).

Burleson lost after being pinned after battling for 5:10.

Burleson went on to face Sophie Reed of Southeast Polk. Burleson came out on top after a pin in 3:06 

Humboldt’s Danica Diedrick faced Burleson next for the third place spot. Burleson took third after a match that lasted 2:25 and ended in a pin.

With Burleson finishing third, Karlea Monson was making her way through the tournament at 170 pounds as well.

Monson first faced Cedar Falls Elizabeth Mills.Mills was able to best Monson by fall in 2:16.

Monson would face Bettendorf’s Rylee Froh and make quick work of the sophomore, pinning her in :47 seconds.

Monson and Raelen Manderfiel of NHTV battled for 2:17 and Manderfiel came out on top with a pin to end Monson’s day.

Koontz was also making her way through the bracket and first competed against Reed of Southeast Polk. 

Reed defeated Koontz in 5:04 getting the pin.

Koontz would then face Mailey Short of Nevada, falling in 1:31 to end her day.

170 JV – Jannali Bear Don’t Walk of Clear Lake faced Peyton Katzer of Lewis Central at 170 pounds.

Bear Don’t Walk lost after a long 4:43 that ended in a pin for Katzer.

Bear Don’t Walk faced Jada Chisholm, of Osage. The Clear Lake freshman pinned Chisholm to move on to face Abby Boone of Emmetsburg.

Kira Cox of APGC was next for Bear Don’t Walk and after a match that lasted 1:24, Cox took third place and Bear Don’t Walk would take fourth.

115 JV – At 115 pounds in the JV class, the Lions fielded Avenlee Ulrich who fell to Ali Burkhalter of APGC by a 5-3 decision.

Ulrich then faced Ella Eggers of Osage, coming out on top after a long 5:53 battle which would see her face Alysia Dundee of Waukee.

Dundee defeated Ulrich after a match that lasted 3:45 and ended with Ulrich getting pinned.  Dundee take the championship and Ulrich took third overall.
