Clear Lake boys wrestling had a busy week with a quad last Thursday that saw Humboldt take first place, Clear Lake took second, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows in third and Roland-Story placed fourth.
Then, fast-forward to Saturday and the Lions hosted a wrestling tournament that kept the wrestlers busy and the spectators entertained for most of the day.Jake Trenary was a highlight, earning a championship at 215 pounds.
Clear Lake Quad
vs. Roland-Story
The Lions faced Roland-Story to open the quad and it was a close match-up with Clear Lake edging out Roland-Story, 40-36, to take the victory. Clear Lake had one forfeit at 132 pounds.
106 – Konnor Blume, of Roland-Story, defeated John Amos by an 11-4 decision.
113 – Hayden Shear, of Clear Lake, was defeated by Caiden Latch by fall, getting pinned in :47 seconds.
120 – Noah Potter, of Clear Lake, defeated Hayden Eslick after a match that lasted 2:47 and ended in a Potter pin.
126 – Blake Loof, of Roland-Story, defeated Jeseb Prestholt by pin in 1:36.
138 – Aiden Hippen, of Clear Lake, defeated Wyatt Ramus pinning him in a quick :35 seconds.
144 – Carter Perry, of Clear Lake, grappled with Anthony Jones which ended in a Perry pin after 2:37.
150 – Tyler LeFevre, of Clear Lake, defeated IsaacHall by a major decision 15-3.
157 – Christian Dunning, of Clear Lake, defeated Cooper Triggs by fall in a fast :49 seconds.
165 – Logan Powers, of Roland-Story, defeated Raif Baack by fall in just under one minute. Baack was pinned in :53 seconds.
175 – Hesston Johnson, of Roland-Story, defeated Jack Hackman by fall, pinning Hackman in :20 seconds.
190 – Dylan Evenson, of Clear Lake, defeated Ian Tripp pinning him in 1:15.
215 – Jake Trenary, of Clear Lake, defeated Jaxson Kadolph after a bout that lasted 4:55 ending in a pin.
285 – Aaron Peyton, of Roland-Story, defeated Max Orchard by a 6-0 decision.
CL vs. CGD
The Lions and Cowboys were evenly matched, so evenly matched it came down to a tie at the end.
In the tightly contested race we saw the coaches argue across the mat about certain moves and then again at the end of the match as the score sat at 33-33 and what the tie-breaker would come down to.
The official broke out the rule book and Clear Lake head coach Evan Johnson continued to state tie breakers came down to forfeits.
There was only one forfeit in the match which went against the Cowboys at 132 pounds.
After a quick search, the official found that it was indeed forfeits and the Lions won the match 34-33.
106 – Amos defeated Lucas Ennis by a close 6-3 decision.
113 – Lucas Cayler defeated Shear, pinning him in :47 seconds.
120 – Ryan Hartwig defeated Prestholt by fall in :56 seconds.
126 – Potter defeated Kolton Hefti in a sudden victory by a score of 9-7.
138 – Perry defeated Abram Wessels by a 6-4 decision.
144 – LeFevre defeated Mason Warnke with a pin in 1:32.
150 – Cooper Nosbush defeated Clear Lake’s Cooper Cooke by a 6-0 decision.
157 – Dunning defeated Jaxen Engstrom by fall, pinning Engstrom in 1:34.
165 – Selvin Gonzalez defeated Hackman in a sudden victory by an 8-6 decision.
175 – Caleb Seaba defeated Clear Lake’s Hayden Bergman by fall in 1:41.
190 – Mason Allen defeated Evenson by a 10-7 decision.
215 – Orchard was defeated by Ashtin Willms pinning Orchard in 1:30.
285 – Trenary defeated Jaxun Pholman by fall in a quick :35 second pin.
CL vs. Humboldt
The Humboldt Wildcats came out in first place after going undefeated in the quadrangular.
The final match for both Humboldt and Clear Lake saw both teams sitting at 2-0 and a victory would ensure a first place finish.
It was decidedly one-sided as Humboldt went on to win 57-15 as a team, but the Lions put up some good matches against the Wildcats.
106 – Sam Knight defeated Amos by pinning him in 1:22.
113 – Aden Prenger defeated Shear, pinning him in :20 seconds.
120 – Owen Mayall defeated Potter by a 6-1 decision after three rounds.
126 – Tyce Clarken defeated Prestholt after a quick :35 second pin.
132 – Hippen defeated Cyler Cirks by an 8-2 decision.
138 – Brady Beers defeated Perry by pinning him in :44 seconds.
144 – Jaxson Kirchhoff defeated LeFevre after going three rounds. Both struggled to score but a late single point put Kirchoff in front for a 1-0 decision.
157 – Trey Al-Hameed defeated Cooke by fall in :53 seconds.
165 – Boredy Hendricks defeated Dunning by fall in 2:39.
175 – Landon Halverson defeated Hackman in :43 seconds by pin.
190 – Gaige Allen defeated Evenson by way of a 9-2 decision.
215 – Trenary defeated Ethan Kunert by fall in a very quick :19 second pin.
285 – Orchard defeated Jack Guy by fall after a lengthy match that lasted 5:46.
Clear Lake Invitational
On Saturday, Jan. 6, Clear Lake hosted a wrestling invitational with eight schools competing.
The schools in attendance (other than Clear Lake) were: Algona, Charles City, Emmetsburg, Forest City, North Butler-Clarksville, Okoboji and West Fork.
Clear Lake had one champion out of the tournament in Jake Trenary at 215 pounds, as well as multiple podium finishers when the final match was had.
106 – Starting at 106 pounds, John Amos stayed busy to finish second overall after being defeated in the first place match by North Butler’s Carl Shew by fall in 3:58. His journey through the weight class saw him take on Forest City’s Myles Henn first, getting the pin after 1:07 and then facing Shew in the first place match.
113 – Hayden Shear finished fifth overall in his weight class. Shear faced Nathan Stofferan of Okoboji in which Stofferan defeated Shear, pinning him in 2:40 putting the Clear Lake freshman in consolation contention.
Shear faced Weston Miller, of North Butler, but was pinned in 1:35 for fifth place.
120 – Noah Potter finished third overall and saw a spot on the podium to end his day.
His day began with North Butler’s Jack Bartels in which Potter pinned the freshman in 3:49 to face Lincoln Wilcoxon, of Emmetsburg.
Wilcoxon defeated Potter by a 7-3 decision and the Clear Lake senior moved into the consolation side of the bracket.
Potter faced Myles Lopez, of Okoboji, defeating him by a technical fall score of 17-2.
Potter would then face Andrew Hofman, of Forest City, for third place in which Potter defeated Hofman by a 10-6 decision.
126 – Jeseb Prestholt finished his tournament day in sixth place overall. His day began with a battle against Algona’s Elijah Wilhite. Wilhite defeated Prestholt by pinning him in :27 seconds.
Prestholt then faced Maison Fleener and get the victory by a 6-2 decision.
It was Aiden Morrison, of North Butler, up next for Prestholt, but a pin in :37 seconds took Prestholt down and put the Clear Lake junior in a battle for fifth.
Prestholt faced Ben Norland, of Forest City, and the Forest City junior took fifth after pinning Prestholt in 4:00.
132 – Aiden Hippen finished his tournament on the second step of the podium after losing in the first place match against North Butler’s Tanner Arhes by a 16-11 decision.
Hippen’s day began with a victory over Emmetsburg’s Dayton Strohman, pinning him in a quick :29 seconds before moving on to face Forest City’s Gavin Grunhovd.
Hippen defeated Grunhovd by technical fall, outscoring the Forest City junior 18-0.
The win put Hippen into the first place match where Hippen just came up short.
138 – Carter Perry finished his day on the second step of the podium as well, falling to Algona’s Barrett Morgan by pin in 3:08.
Perry’s day began with a bout against Okoboji’s Nathanial Ball in which Perry got the pin.
It was North Butler’s Jaxson Miller up next for Perry and that match lasted 4:22 ending in Perry pinning Miller to move his way into the first place match against Morgan, in which he fell to take second.
144 – Tyler LeFevre finished second overall at 144 pounds, falling to Algona’s Tate Slagle by way of a pin in 3:32.
LeFevre’s tournament started with a match-up against Okoboji’s Dillon Wittrock. The two grappled for 4:29 before LeFevre was able to pin his junior opponent and move on to face Charles City’s Jacob Vance.
LeFevre defeated Vance by a 12-2 major decision to head into the first place match against Slagle.
150 – Cooper Cooke finished his day in fourth place overall after falling to Okoboji’s Tyler Pyle in the third place bout by fall in 3:20.
Cooke first met North Butler’s Ryland Pitzenberger in a tight match that saw Cooke be victorious by a 2-0 decision.
Cooke then faced Algona’s Ashton Moreno and fell in :33 seconds by a pin.
It was then consolation bracket for the Clear Lake junior where he faced Noah Brones, of Forest City. Cooke won by a 9-1 major decision before falling to Pyle in the third place match.
157 – Raif Baack stood on the second spot of the podium at 157 pounds after falling to Algona’s Taevyn Zinnel after an injury.
Baack began the day against Okoboji’s Tristan Strantz, defeating him by pin in 1:11 and then facing Bradyen Yates of Emmetsburg.
Cooke won by a 7-0 decision and would advance into the first place match against Zinnel, but an injury would keep Baack out of the match and put him in second place.
165 – Christian Dunning finished in second place after falling to Justin Writz, of Emmetsburg, by a close 5-3 decision.
Jack Hackman wrestled at 165 pounds for Clear Lake, but didn’t place.
Dunning and Hackman were matched against each other to start the day, but Dunning advanced with no contest and Hackman moved into consolation.
Hackman faced Colton Anderegg, of Charles City, and fell after a match getting pinned in 2:42.
Dunning wrestled Colby Jennings, of Algona, and take a close 3-1 decision to move to the first place match against Wirtz where he took second.
175 – Hayden Bergman finished fifth overall in his weight class, falling to North Butler’s Alex Bacon by way of pin in 1:42.
Bergman faced James Gellerman, of Okoboji, in the first round, falling quickly in :17 seconds.
Bergman would then face Forest City’s Cale Lorenzen, getting the pin in 2:36 to move on to face Algona’s Owen Johnson.
Johnson defeated Bergman to put Bergman against Bacon in the fifth round where he fell to sixth place.
190 – Dylan Evenson placed fifth overall at 190 pounds after defeating Okoboji’s Sam Bockman by fall in 1:37.
Evenson faced Bockman in the first round of the day, defeating him by fall in 1:32 before facing Emmetsburg’s Ryan Wirtz.
Wirtz defeated Evenson by a 14-5 major decision to put Evenson into the consolation round where he faced Gavin Goche, of Algona.
Evenson fell to Goche in sudden victory overtime by a score of 9-7.
Evenson and Bockman met again where the Clear Lake senior got the pin just five seconds later than the first round.
215 – Jake Trenary had a fine day after finishing first overall at 215 pounds after defeating Algona’s Hunter Kollasch by a 5-1 decision.
Trenary started the day with a bye. His first match was against Emmetsburg’s Nick Saxton. Trenary pinned Saxton in :41 seconds.
Trenary would then face Kollasch in the first place match where he got the 5-1 victory over the Algona senior.
285 – Max Orchard finished the day in third place after defeating Ethan Marso, of Algona by fall in 1:24.
Orchard started the day against North Butler’s Brecken Uhlenhopp. Orchard defeated Uhlenhopp by fall, pinning him in 1:52 before moving on to face Gage Jorgenson, of Emmetsburg.
Jorgenson would get the pin in :40 seconds and Orchard moved on to face Okoboji’s Bryce Ortega.
Orchard won by a 6-4 decision to face Marso for third place.
