Three candidates announce intentions to run for Sheriff

Three candidates have announced their  intentions of running for the position of Cerro Gordo County Sheriff following Sheriff Kevin Pals’ announcement that he will not seek re-election. Two of the candidates, Chief Deputy Sheriff David Hepperly and Lieutenant Matt Klunder, currently work with the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office. The third candidate, Brian Koob, was a former Cerro Gordo County Deputy Sheriff and is currently an Iowa State Trooper.

Lieutenant Matt Klunder is 48 years old and was born and raised in Mason City, where he lives with his wife, Kerry.  He has served Cerro Gordo County for 25 years, starting as a Corrections Officer in August of 1998 and working his way up to Deputy Sheriff in 2002. He began working for the Sheriff’s Office as a full time narcotics investigator in 2004 at the North Central Iowa Narcotics Task Force.

During his time on the Narcotics Task Force, he was sworn as a Special Federal Officer for the FBI where he worked closely with state prosecutors and the U.S. Attorney’s Office while investigating many high profile drug cases.  Klunder was promoted by Sheriff Pals in 2012 to the rank of Lieutenant, where he currently serves as the Sheriff’s Office night shift patrol supervisor.

Klunder said one of the goals that he would like to achieve once in office is to start a patrol K9 program.  “I will be a good steward of the budget provided by the taxpayers and I will work hard to continue with a strong tradition by the Sheriff’s Office of working with the community, helping the citizens of Cerro Gordo County, and being strong on crime,” he said.

Chief Deputy Sheriff David Hepperly has been serving Cerro Gordo County and its citizens for the past 22 years. “I am proud to announce that I am running for Cerro Gordo County Sheriff in the upcoming election” Hepperly said. “Thank you for your support, as I am excited for this new opportunity.”
