Clear Lake Lion girls have success at home

The Clear Lake Lion girls traveled to Mason City to face Mason City and Waterloo East on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

The Lions fell to Mason City 57-22 but defeated Waterloo East 18-0.

 

Mason City 57

Clear Lake 22

The Lion girls struggled against the Mason City Riverhawks, falling 57-22 and losing nine matches, while winning four.

100 – Ella Als, of Mason City, defeated Avery Williams by an 8-2 decision.

110 – Madeline Cornish, of Mason City, defeated Saphira Olsen by fall in 3:46.

115 – Layla Phillips, of Mason City, defeated Madeline McLaughlin by fall in 2:00.

120 – Aali Martinez, of Clear Lake, defeated Averi Peterson by fall in 5:51.

125 – Kamina Munson, of Mason City, defeated Pieper Lester by fall in 3:45.

140 – Kallie Gibbons, of Mason City, defeated Charlie Larsen by fall in :47 seconds.

145 – Alexa Heflin, of Clear Lake, defeated Emma Meyer by fall in 3:25.

155 – Gracey Smith, of Clear Lake, defeated Jayda LaSalle by a 9-1 major decision.

190 – Kyleigh James, of Mason City, defeated Zoe Koontz by fall in 1:31.

235 – Taryn Boehmer, of Mason City, defeated Kendra Kruckenberg by fall in 1:19.

The Lion girls had success against Waterloo East, defeating them 18-0 with only three matches wrestled.

190 – Kayma Burleson, of Clear Lake, defeated Ashley Elgoff by fall in :21 seconds.

120 – Aali Martinez, of Clear Lake, defeated Libby Stocks by fall.

130 – Pieper Lester, of Clear Lake, defeated Honey Govea by fall in 3:47.

The Clear Lake girls wrestling team hosted an unofficial North Central Conference tournament last week and saw 12 girls in the top three.

100 – Avery Williams placed third overall after falling to Mara Davis, of Algona, in sudden victory 5-4. Williams then fell to Harley Tobin by fall in :57 seconds and Williams took third with a pin against Sophia Boeck by fall in 1:46.

110 – Shaelyn Ulrich placed fourth with a loss to Sophia Harris, of Humboldt, by pin in 1:34. Laura Stohr, of Algona defeated Ulrich by fall, pinning her in 2:55. In a teammate battle, Ulrich was defeated by Saphira Olsen for third place by fall in 3:19.

Saphira Olsen, fell to Stohr by a 6-2 decision before falling to Sophia Harris, of Humboldt, by fall in 3:04. Olsen then defeated teammate Shaelyn Ulrich by fall in 3:19.

115 – Avenlee Ulrich placed fifth overall, beginning her night with a loss to Makayla Erpelding, of Algona, by fall in 4:31 before defeated Deana Raisch, of Iowa Falls, by a close 4-3 decision. Gracey May, of Humboldt, defeated Ulrich by fall in 5:51.

Madeline McLaughlin placed second after defeating Gracey May in a 2-1 decision but falling to Alissa Engel, of Algona, by a close 7-5 decision.

120 – Emma Allie wrestled teammate Aali Martinez and fell by pin. Allie then fell by pin in 1:11 to Malyn Davis and then to Laina Dettmann, of Humboldt, in 2:43.

Aali Martinez defeated Emma Allie before defeating Laina Dettmann by a 10-3 decision. Martinez fell to Malyn Davis, of Algona, by pin in 5:00 to take second.

125 – Pieper Lester was champion after defeatingGracie Lyon by pin, Lillian Allie by pin and then Presley Mulford by injury default.

140 – Cecilia Mattis placed third overall with a loss to Charlie Larsen and Lauryn Silvey, both by falls.

Charlie Larsen placed second overall with wins over Cecilia Mattis and then falling in 5:12 to Iowa Falls Lauryn Silvey.

145 – Alexa Heflin was champion with wins over Eli Eden, of Algona, by pin in 1:29, Mia Schluter, of Humboldt, by pin in :39 seconds and over Allison Trunkhill, of Algona, by fall in 3:36.

155 – Gracey Smith was champion with wins over teammate Kaci Rodman by fall in :55 seconds, and Elsie Hubbell, of Humboldt, by fall in 2:48.

Kaci Rodman was second after falling to teammate Gracey Smith and Humboldt’s Elsie Hubbell by fall in 1:09.

170 – Jannali Bear Don’t Walk fell to Kynnedy Gunderson, of Iowa Falls, and teammate Karlea Monson by fall in 2:50.

Zoe Koontz placed fifth with a loss to Danica Diedrick, of Humboldt and a loss to Iowa Falls’ Kynnedy Gunderson. Koontz defeated teammate Karlea Monson by fall in 2:47.

Karlea Monson lost to Burleson by fall in :45 seconds, and defeated teammate Jannali Bear Don’t Walk by fall in 2:50. Monson lost to Diedrick and Koontz to place sixth.

Kayma Burleson placed second with victories over Monson and Gunderson but fell to Algona’s Reagan Haynes by a 5-4 decision. 

190 – Kendra Kruckenberg placed second with victories over Madison Fisher and Kennedy Robinson, of Iowa Falls and Humboldt, respectively. Krukenberg lost to Algona’s Gretchen Gorham by fall in 1:02 to take second.

 

Mason City 

Tournament

The Lion girls traveled to Mason City for a tournament that saw two top-three finishes for Clear Lake.

100 – Avery Williams, of Clear Lake,  faced Mason City’s Ella Als, falling in a 6-2 decision. Williams faced  North Butler’s Addy Johnson, falling in a 9-1 decision before facing Dallas Center-Grimes’ Georgia Edwards. Edwards won in a 4-2 decision.

110 – Clear Lake’s Saphira Olsen took on Makenna Kurth, of Waukee, to start the day. Olsen  fell by way of pin in 3:38. Olsen faced Emmetburg’s Anika Stearns and got the win after a 6-4 decision. Against Mason City’s Madeline Cornish, Olsen won by pin in 1:54 and would face Humboldt’s Sophie Harris, falling in :58 seconds. Olsen would then fall in :39 seconds to Waverly-Shell Rock’s Macy Tiedt in the 5th place match.

115 – Madeline McLaughlin faced Addalyn Isaacson, of Crestwood, falling in 5:30 by pin. McLaughlin then faced Emmetsburg’s Lei Peppe, winning by a 3-1 decision before falling to Averi Peterson, of Mason City, in :39 seconds by way of pin.

120 – Aali Martinez, of Clear Lake, defeated Rylee Nehman, of Spencer, by fall in 3:43 to start her day but fell to Waverly-Shell Rock’s Camille Schult by fall in 4:41. Martinez defeated Mari Delaney, of Waukon, by fall in 1:32 in consolation before falling to Nehman , of Spencer, by fall in 3:31. Martinez’s day ended by fall in 1:34 to Laina Dettmann, of Humboldt.

125 – Pieper Lester placed second overall on the day after defeating Gracie Lyon, of Humboldt in the first round, getting the pin in 2:20. Next, Lester defeated Hope Shaffar, of West Marshall, by fall in :47 seconds. In the semifinal, Lester won by decision over Breanna Johnson, of Spencer, by a 7-2 decision. In the first place match-up, Lester ultimately fell by a 4-2 decision to South Winneshiek’s Kaydn Meyer.

140 – Charlie Larsen, of Clear Lake, fell in 2:16 to Crestwood’s Amber Harmening in her first match of the day. In consolation Larsen defeated Rae-Lynn Metner, of Saint Ansgar, by fall in :24 seconds. In round four, Larsen fell in 4:22 to Kaylie Havig, of Osage.

145 – Alexa Heflin, of Clear Lake, defeated Ava Bossom, of Waukon, by a 12-7 decision before taking the victory over Lillian Fischer, of West Marshall, pinning her in 5:28. Heflin fell in the semifinal to Kelly Throndson of NH/TV, pinning Heflin in 3:39. Heflin came back to beat Lucy Porter of Fort Dodge by fall in 3:42 before falling the third place match to Aubrey Chapman, of Osage, by a close 4-3 decision.

155 – Gracey Smith, of Clear Lake, defeated Evie Wagner, of Waverly-Shell Rock, by a close 4-2 decision to start off her day. Smith fell to Kyleigh James, of Mason City, by way of pin in 1:59 but worked her way back with a pin over Elsie Hubbell, of Humbolt, in 1:23 and then another pin for Smith over Meredith Crawford, of West Marshall. Smith fell to Jamie Jones, of Sumner-Fredericksburg, by pin in 3:08. In the fifth place round, Smith was pinning in 1:59 by Annalesissa Arnold, of Decorah.

170 –  Kayma Burleson, of Clear Lake, finished second on the day with three wins and a loss in the first place match. Burleson defeated Elyza Williamson, of Osage, by fall in 2:14 before pinning Maddie Pulis, of Fort Dodge, by fall in 1:37. Burleson then defeated Averie Wittkop, of West Marshall, by fall in 1:02. Burleson fell in the first place bout by pin in 1:09 to Naomi Simon, of Decorah.

190 – Kendra Kruckenberg fell in her opening round to Mason City’s Taryn Boehmer by a 9-1 major decision. Kruckenberg defeated Vivian Soifer, of Charles City, by pinning her in :29 seconds and then defeated Rose Niewoehner, of Crestwood, by fall in 3:29. Taryn Boehmer and Krukenberg met again, with the same victory as Kruckenberg was pinned in 2:36. Kruckenberg took seventh overall with a win by fall in 1:08.
