Crash sends car into marsh

A non-fatal, single vehicle crash occured at about 9:47 p.m. on Monday, April 8, at the intersection of South Shore Drive and 235th St.

According to a report from the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s office, Norman Christopher Coles, 48, of Clear Lake, was driving a 2007 Ford Explorer Sport driving at a high rate of speed.  A deputy attempted to make a traffic stop and the driver fled at a high rate of speed, reaching over 100 mph.  Within 30 seconds of the attempted stop, Coles lost control and rolled the vehicle into the marsh area.  The vehicle rolled several times and came to rest on its side in the marsh.

Coles had to be extricated by the Clear Lake Fire Department after being trapped inside the vehicle.  He was transported to Mercy One North Iowa for non-life threatening injuries by Clear Lake Fire Medics.

The accident remains under investigation, charges are pending, and alcohol is a suspected to have been a factor in the accident.

Iowa State Patrol also assisted at the scene.
