Lion boys power through weather on the links

Humboldt 159

Clear Lake 161

Webster City 164

The Clear Lake Lion boys golf team traveled to Webster City for a triangular against the Lynx and Humboldt Wildcats for a North Central Conference match-up last Thursday, April 18.

The Lions came in second, behind Humboldt, by two strokes and led Webster City by three.

The wet and windy conditions made for some interesting golf, but the scores weren’t as bad Lion coach Eric Perry had predicted.

“Not a bad score for the wet and windy conditions,” said Perry. “It was just not good enough to sweep.”

The par 36 saw all golfers above par, aside from medalist Parker Sleiter of Humboldt who was at par.

Clear Lake was led by Taylor Plagge who shot a 39, while Eli Anderson shot 40 and Gavin Roske and Dylan Bieber both shot 41.

Cade Dillavou and Gavin Anderson were both at 43 on the day.

“Taylor Plagge really stepped up in a big way, allowing us to defeat Webster. We need him to score well,” said coach Perry. “Dylan Bieber had to grind. A triple bogey during his round then rallied for 1 birdie and 4 pars.”

On the JV side of things, the Lions won with a 176 team score, followed by Webster City with 185 and Humboldt with 192.

The Lions were led by Dylan Plagge who shot a 40.

Jordan Ainley shot a 43, Luke Fuhrman shot 46, and Hudson Carney and Kenny Fisher both shot 47, while Carter Perry rounded out the team with a 49.

Algona 166

The Lions hit the road again on Friday, April 19 and again faced windy conditions in Algona.

The Lions were able to come out ahead by just three strokes to beat the Bulldogs.

Sam Schutjer, of Algona, was medalist for the meet, shooting one above par at 37 strokes.

Alex Manske, also of Algona, shot a 39.

The Lions were led by Gavin Anderson who shot a 39 followed by Eli Anderson and Dylan Bieber both with 40s.

Cade Dillavou shot a 44, Gavin Roske shot a 46 and Taylor Plagge finished with 48.

“When you play any event that involved hitting a ball high in the air, with a wind advisory, you’re going to struggle,” said coach Perry. “Gavin Anderson was our horse today, shooting three over. I’m super glad to see Gavin was back into form and in medal condition.”

“He carried the team onto victory with Eli and Bieber, persevering through their round for the team. Cade did the same thing. It was easy to buckle against the conditions and back down.”

On the junior varsity side, the Lions won 185 to 195 and were led by Kenny Fisher with a 45.

Luke Fuhrman shot 46, followed by Dylan Plagge and Carter Perry, both with 47.

Jordan Ainley shot a 49 and Hudson Carney shot a 53.

“Kenny played tremendous on JV. He had some good knock down shots into the wind,” said coach Perry. “Carter and Dylan played a gutsy round with some tough double bogeys. The putting conditions were awful as well. It’s tough enough reading putts while accounting for the wind pushing the ball.”
