The Lions placed 10th overall with senior Meghan DeLong in the top three, shooting a 76, which was one stroke off a three-way tie for first.
Natalie Henson, of Marshalltown, and Payton Drefke, of Ankeny Centennial, both shot 75 to tie for first.
Shaelyn Ulrich placed 40th shooting a 109, while Emma Sonderman placed 50th with a 113.
Clear Lake vs Algona
Clear Lake 195
Algona 199
It was a close dual between two North Central Conference teams last Friday, April 19 as the girls faced 25 mph winds and 33 degree weather.
It was no easy task, but the girls on both sides were able to manage their shots and the Lion girls saw three in the top five.
Abby Brooks, of Algona, was the best on the course for the day, shooting a 41, while Clear Lake’s Meghan DeLong shot a 42 despite a rough start that included shooting from under a fir tree.
Emma Sonderman was close behind, shooting a 49, while Mackenzie Clemens shot a 52, along with teammate Shaelyn Ulrich.
Malinda Voortmann shot a 57 and Elle Ebeling rounded out the Lions with a 58.
“After not playing great as a team on Thursday, it was great to see the girls battle back and play a decent round at home the next night,” said Lion head coach Colby Andrews. “Makenzie Clemens shot a 52 which is her lowest round ever at this point. Emma Sonderman came up huge breaking 50 for the first time in her career with a 49, Shaelyn Ulrich followed Makenzie’s 52 with one of her own, she played very steady throughout the day. Meghan shot 42 and ended up earning the runner-up medalist in the meet. She didn’t play her best, but as always even when she doesn’t play great she still grinds out decent scores.”
The Lion girls traveled to Ames on Monday, April 22. The results of that meet will appear in next week’s edition of the Mirror-Reporter.
