Man dies after a head-on crash near Clear Lake

A Mason City man died after driving into a semi-tractor trailer last Saturday night according to the Clear Lake Police Department.

The Clear Lake Police Department communications center reported that at 11:19 p.m. on April 27 they had received numerous 911 calls about a passenger car traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of I-35 around mile marker 193 near Clear Lake.

Additional callers reported shortly afterward that the car, still heading in the wrong direction on I-35 South, had struck a semi-tractor trailer head-on.

Clear Lake Police officers arrived on the scene within four minutes of the first 911 call. The driver of the car, 56-year-old Glen Hemming, of Mason City, was deceased as a result of injuries sustained in the collision.

The driver of the semi, Hussein Haidar, of Burnsville, Minn., was uninjured but his semi sustained significant damage and was disabled, according to Clear Lake police.

Due to the nature of the crash, the Clear Lake Police Department requested the assistance of the Iowa State Patrol. The southbound lanes of the interstate were closed for nearly four hours.

The Clear Lake Police Department was assisted by the Clear Lake Fire Department, and the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office.
