Girls golf post best scores of season

Webster City

The Clear Lake Lion girls golf team traveled to Webster City where calm winds allowed for a pleasant experience for the girls. The Lions topped Webster City 184-211.

“This was by far our best round of the year,” said head coach Colby Andrews. “We finally broke 190 and gained a little confidence going forward. As a coach the thing I am most optimistic about is that we played that well without Meghan having a great day for her.”

Meghan DeLong, the teams lone senior, is headed to Minnesota State University next season and has consistently led the Clear Lake Lions this season.

In Webster City, DeLong still shot a 42 and was the low scorer, however, the Lions saw improved scores all around.

Elle Ebeling and Shaelyn Ulrich saw big improvements, each shooting 46, a record low for both girls and Ebeling’s first time breaking 50.

Mackenzie Clemens shot a 50 which marked her lowest score as well.

“There was just a lot of positive things I took away from Monday nights contest.”

The weather continued to cooperate with the golfers as the Lions hosted Iowa Falls-Alden, Hampton Dumont-CAL, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows and St. Edmond  last Thursday, May 2.

The mayflies were also out in force, but the Lion girls rose above the competition to shoot a 188 for first place.

Humboldt shot a 201 for second place, Iowa Falls-Alden shot 228 for third, St. Edmond fourth with 262 and C-G-D shot 276 for fifth.

DeLong led the Lions with a 36, while Ulrich was right behind shooting a 46.

Ebeling shot 51 and Clemens shot a 55 to round out the Lions.

“I am very encouraged by our scoring this week,” said coach Andrews. “Going into this week I thought we needed a little more mental toughness and after grinding through the toughest part of our schedule last week I think we are breaking through.”
