Lion boys second to Algona at NCC track meet

The Clear Lake Lion boys track & field team finished second to Algona at the North Central Conference meet last Thursday, May 2, in Clarion. Algona finished with 150 points to Clear Lake’s 141, while Humboldt scored 127 to round out the top three.

Iowa Falls-Alden finished fourth, Webster City fifth, Hampton-Dumont-CAL sixth, St. Edmond seventh and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows eighth.

“Our boys had a really great night of competition at the NCC Championships. Going into the meet we knew it was going to be a close battle with Algona and it sure lived up to that expectation,” said Lions coach Tyler Havens. “In these conference meets, the individual events are so important because you’re going to score points in relays regardless of who runs on them.”

The Lions battled throughout the night and even set a new record in the 4×100 after having done so at the Drake Relays just a few weeks ago.

The 4×100 team of Blake Enke, Titan Schmitt, Sam Dodge and Alex Kerr ran a time of 42.98 to set the newest school record.

Kerr would go on to finish second in the 400 meter dash in a time of 51.58 later in the night.

The 800 sprint medley team of Enke, Schmitt, Dodge and Kerr, finished in a time of 1:35.6 to take first place.

Dylan Litzel cleared 6-03, beating his Drake Relays height of 6-01 to finish first.

The shuttle hurdle team had a second place finish and included Derek Erpelding, Gage Larson, Keeton Jeppeson and Cooper Cooke who ran a time of 1:02.68.

Owen Smith finished third in the 1600 meter run in a time of 4:53.89 and finished third in the 3200 meter run as well in a time of 10:39.88.

“All of our boys really performed well and there wasn’t an event that we felt like didn’t go our way,” said Havens. “We had a great night and so did Algona.”

Litzel breaks school record

On Monday, May 6, the track and field team traveled to Central Springs where they placed second overall.

It ended up being a record breaking night for Dylan Litzel, clearing 6-8 in the high jump, which is a new Lion standard and ties the best mark in Class 3A.

Litzel recently competed at the Drake Relays where he cleared 6-1 but couldn’t get over 6-3 at the time.

Full results from the meet will appear in next week’s edition of the Mirror-Reporter.
