Lion baseball has rough start to season

The Clear Lake Lion boys are off to a quick start with a busy week last week, falling to 2-3 on the season and 1-1 in the North Central Conference with a win over Iowa Falls-Alden and a loss to Humboldt in Conference play. Last week, the Lions were 1-2 with the second loss against Newman Catholic.

Last week, May 29, the Lions traveled to Iowa Falls to face the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets in a North Central Conference match-up that saw the Lions take their second win of the season.

Starting off with a nice two-run inning, the Lions were in a good spot, although, Iowa Falls-Alden matched the Lions to even the game at two after the first inning ended.

Clear Lake put the go-ahead run across the plate in the top of the second and then led 4-2 at the top of the third, but a surge from the Cadets saw three added in the bottom of the third to lead the Lions 5-4.

No runs scored in the fourth kept the Cadets ahead, but the back end of the game saw the Lions score seven across the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

The Lions recorded 11 runs on 10 hits with eight RBI.

Luke Fuhrman had three hits off four at-bats with four runs and one walk on a hit by pitch to lead the Lion offense.

Also recording runs for the Lions were: Dylan Bieber and Hudson Carney with two, Andrew Theiss, Nick Strayer and Dontrel Johnson with one apiece.

The Lions put three on the mound with Fuhrman, Carney and Max Larson all enjoying pitching duties.

Fuhrman received the win, pitching 1.2 innings, walking three and striking out four.

Carney pitched four innings and allowed five runs off four hits and struck out eight with two walks. Larson pitched 1.1 innings, struck out one.

 

Newman Catholic 7

The Lions struggled to put up runs against a strong Newman Catholic Knights team on Thursday, May 30.

The Knights started off with a big first inning scoring three runs before adding their fourth in the bottom of the third.

The Lions were still looking for a way to get a run through but it wasn’t until the top of the sixth that the Lions scored, sending two across home plate.

Newman Catholic answered back with three runs to close out the game with a 7-2 loss for the Lions.

The Lions put four on the mound against Newman Catholic with Jaxson Anderson seeing the most pitches with 61 and three innings allowing four runs on six hits, three walks and three strikeouts.

Wesley Wharton pitched two innings and allowed one hit and walked two, while Dylan Bieber pitched 0.1 innings and allowed three runs off two hits and struck out one and walked one.

Max Larson pitched 0.2 innings and struck out two batters.

The Lion bats had three hits on the night and saw Fuhrman and Bieber with the teams two runs.

 

Humboldt 11

It was another tough night for the Lions, this time against NCC foe Humboldt Wildcats.

The Wildcats had a monster first inning putting five runs on the board while holding the Lions off to get a nice cushion to begin the game.

The Lions scored their first run in the second inning but allowed one in the top of the third before adding two of their own in the fourth.

The Wildcats enjoyed another big inning in the sixth, adding five more runs to put the game on ice and put the Lions down to 2-3 on the season.

Fuhrman was back on the mound for the Lions as was Andrew Theiss.

Theiss pitched four innings, allowing six runs on eight hits and striking out three, while Fuhrman allowed five runs on four hits and struck out one.

The Lions recorded three runs off four hits and had two RBI.

Bieber, Johnson and Brady Bieber each had one run for the team.

CGD 10

The Lions hosted Clarion-Goldfield-Dows on Monday, June 3, and what started out as a good start quickly turned.

The Lions scored two in the bottom of the first but the Cowboys struck back in the top of three with three runs to move ahead.

In the top of the third, the Cowboys loaded the bases with two outs. By the end of the third, the Cowboys had pushed ahead 7-3.

The Lions couldnt recover from the inflicted damage and allowed three more runs while scoring two of their own to fall, 10-5, to the Cowboys and to 2-4 on the season.

Taking the loss was Max Larson who pitched 2.2 innings, allowing seven runs, walking three and striking out six.

Dylan Bieber relieved Larson, pitching one inning and allowing three runs and striking out one.

Tanner Nelson pitched 3.1 innings and struck out six and allowed two hits.

At the batter’s box the Lions had three hits in five at bats with four RBI.

Hudson Carney had two runs for the Lions, Bieber scored one, Jaxson Anderson scored one and Donrel Johnson ran one in as well.
