Cerro Gordo County Primary election results from June 4

Primaries were held for the Democrat, Republican and Libertarian Parties on June 4 for the purpose of deciding which party candidate will move on to the general election on Nov. 5, 2024. Each party’s candidates who receive at least 35 percent of the vote is automatically placed on the general election ballot.

The following results are for Cerro Gordo County with the exception of state and federal legislators whose territory may cover multiple counties.

All of Cerro Gordo Counties 23 precincts reported with 3,871 ballots cast, which is 12.45 percent of the 31,092 registered voters. Unless otherwise noted, all names will appear on the ballot for general election in November.

Two seats are up for election within the Cerro Gordo County Board of Supervisors in November. For District 1: Rep. incumbent Chris Watts received 896 votes and Dem. Tim Lapointe received 299. For District 3: Rep. Carl Ginapp received 623 votes and Dem. incumbent Lori Meacham Ginapp received 248 votes.

For County Auditor Dem. Adam Wedmore, who is running unopposed, received 749 votes with an additional 152 write-in votes from the Republican party.

The County Sheriff’s position saw the largest amount of voter response. Rep. David Hepperly received 1,716 votes and Rep. Matt Klunder received 1,227. Dem. Brian Koob received 656 of his party’s votes. Each man received over 35 percent of the vote, but with Rep. Hepperly receiving more votes than Klunder he will move on to the general election along with Dem. Koob.

Turning to the Federal and State primary election, U.S. Senator, District 2, Rep. incumbent Ashley Hinson received 22,622 votes statewide and will run against Dem. Sarah Corkery, who received 10,474 of her party’s statewide votes.

In the race for Iowa State Senator, District 3, Republican incumbent Waylon Brown received 2,546 votes statewide while Rep. Doug Campbell received 2,273. Although Campbell received more votes in Cerro Gordo County, Brown actually received the most votes collectively and will appear on the general election ballot. Running as his opponent will be Dem. Richard Lawrence, who received 936 statewide primary votes.

Running for Iowa State Representative for District 59 were Rep. Christian Hermanson with 1,607 votes and Dem. Jeremy True with 643 votes.

For Iowa State Representative for District 60 Rep. incumbent Jane E. Bloomingdale received 1,729 votes while Rep. opponent John Rosenfeld received 1,112 votes. Like Brown and Campbell, Rosenfeld received a higher number of votes locally, but it is Bloomingdale who will move on to the general election where she will run unopposed.

The Libertarian Party had no one on the Federal, State or County ballots for Cerro Gordo County primaries.
