The Clear Lake volleyball team (1-1) had their season opener on Saturday, Aug. 26, at the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows varsity tournament. The Lions had wins over Belmond-Klemme, Manson-NW Webster, and split with Estherville Lincoln Central.
“Overall we had a great day! Our energy was amazing throughout the day and it was exciting to see,” said Head Coach Heather Johnson. “We were down a middle, but senior Payton McGrath stepped up and did a great job. Everyone did exactly what they needed to do for the team today.”
The Lions opened their tournament day with a game against Estherville Lincoln Central (5-1). The Lions edged out the competition in their first match by a score of 21-19. In match two, the Lions completed the sweep with a 21-16 decision.
Alivia Paine had 16 assists in the match and she had two ace serves. Xada Johnson led the team in kills with 7.5 and in digs with five. Adrianna Evans had one block.
For the championship game of the tournament, the Lions played Estherville again. The Midgets won the rematch, taking match one 21-16, and match two 21-17.
Johnson again led the team in kills with 5.5 and in digs with eight. Madi Ott had two blocks in the match. Paine led the team in assists with nine.
“Our younger players – Ella Landau, Avery Hegtvedt, Emersyn McGrath – are catching on fast and have already made so many improvements. Liv (Paine) did a great job running our offense this weekend. Senior Xada Johnson had a great day. Madi Ott’s net play was great,” said Coach Johnson.
