New ice-out record set

New ice-out record set

After much waiting and speculation, the ice was officially declared out on March 3, by Adam Theiss, Water Department Superintendent.

This is the earliest time in recorded history for the ice to be declared officially out on Clear Lake.  The March 3 date beats the previous record set on March 5, 1931.  Despite warm temperatures and windy days, there was still ice attached to the shoreline on South Shore Drive.

“In order to declare ice-out, you have to be able to physically put a boat in at any area of the lake,” according to Theiss.

Last year the ice was declared out on Wednesday, April 5.  The latest ice out date on record is April 29, 1951.

The ice was declared in on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2023. At that time the lake level was -14.04” below the weir.  As of Tuesday, March 5, the lake was -13.44” below the weir according to Theiss.
