Softball home opener hits lightning delay

Monday, the Lion softball squad started its season with a non-conference match-up against the West Fork Warhawks.

The starting nine for the Lions were Jezzie Thompson, Alivia Paine, Taylor Schwenn, Cheyanne Schroeder, Alaina Hartl, Cam Allsbrook, Madi Ott, Megan Fisher, Taylor Bedford and Makayla Johnson.

Thompson handled pitching duties for the Lions, while Schwenn was set-up behind the plate.

The game sat runless until the second inning when the Warhawks found home plate.

With two outs, Preslee Dickman hit an RBI on a grounder back to Thompson in the circle to put the visitors on top.

The Lions evened the score later in the bottom of the third as Paine knocked in a run with a hit back to the Warhawk pitcher Libby Trewin.

At the top of the fifth, it was 2-1 after Dickman was able to collect her second RBI in the fourth but weather had began to move in and eyes were on the sky.

Lightning put the game into delay and after a quick study of the radar, the game was called off. A makeup/restart date has not been set.

The Lions are slated to face Waverly-Shell Rock on Wednesday before facing St. Edmond on Friday in Clear Lake and heading to Charles City this Saturday for a tournament.
