Roske finishes freshman year at State Tournament

It was a fitting end to the golf season with the second day of State Golf being canceled due to weather.

Much of the season, the golfers battled various conditions including wind, rain, and insects among others.

That didn’t stop Clear Lake freshman Gavin Roske from making his debut at the top level of high school golf in his first year of eligibility.

Roske defied the odds and was able to compete on day one of the tournament at Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames.

“He just didn’t have it today,” said head coach Eric Perry. “The course had penalty areas to the right and he was fading his ball right and couldn’t fix it during the round.”

Roske finished the first day 15 strokes over par with an 87 which tied him for 49th.

Unable to compete and lower his score on day two, the lone Lion competitor gained valuable experience for the future.

“It is very tough to make the state tournament as an individual, let alone a freshman,” said coach Perry. “This will drive him for the next three years. Our program will benefit with him and a strong returning team.”
