The Clear Lake Lion girls golf team traveled to Cedar Falls for yet another appearance in the State Golf Tournament at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course last Thursday and Friday.
It was a wet and soupy course that saw the girls battle the elements, much like they had throughout the season.
The Lions only senior, Meghan DeLong, was on top of the leaderboard for Class 3A by the end of round one, sitting in second place with a 73, which was one stroke above par.
DeLong sat behind Gilbert’s Eden Lohrbach who was the only golfer under par with a 69.
Elle Ebeling was tied at 32nd with an 88, Emma Sonderman was 51st with a 98, Shaelyn Ulrich was 55th with 101, MacKenzie Clemens was 63rd with a 107 and Malinda Voortman was 63rd with a 107.
As a team, the Lions sat in seventh overall with a +72.
Round two on Friday had a slow start after rain continued to soak the already saturated ground, pushing the tee off time from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.
It didn’t stop DeLong from staying on course throughout the day with the graduating senior finishing out the State Meet in second place to Gilbert’s Lohrbach.
DeLong found herself three strokes above par, shooting a 74 on day two for a total of 147 which put her squarely in second place to finish out her Clear Lake Lion golf career.
The Lions also saw Elle Ebeling finish with a 177 in 34th place, Emma Sonderman in 49th shooting a 197, Shaelyn Ulrich shooting a 197 and finishing 51st, Mackenzie Clemens in 58th with a 211 and Malinda Voortmann in 59th with a 212.
As a team, the Lions finished the tournament in seventh with a combined score of 718, finishing 142 strokes above par.
Gilbert won the Class 3A state championship 32 above par shooting a 608.
The Lions will graduate DeLong as the lone senior from this 2024 team.
DeLong has signed and will play golf at the collegiate level with Minnesota State University – Mankato.
