Clear Lake 6

The Clear Lake Lions fell to 7-7 on the year after a 10-6 loss to the Forest City Indians who found themselves up 14-5 on the season.

Clear Lake started off well with two runs in the top of the first but the Indians added four to jump ahead.

No runs for the Lions in the second kept them behind before Forest City added insurance to go up 9-2 with a five-run inning.

Clear Lake put two more runs up in the third and then two more in the fifth in an attempt to close the gap, but another run for the Indians in the bottom of the fifth held the Lions at bay and the Lions fell.

The Lions recorded six runs on six hits with four RBI led by freshman Jaxson Anderson who had two runs batted in, two singles and two hits.

Dylan Bieber, Wesley Wharton, Nick Strayer and Luke Fuhrman each had a hit in the game.

The Lions suffered three errors in the loss with 18 putouts and seven assists in 28 total chances fielding.

On the mound the Lions pitched Max Larson who received the loss, pitting two innings allowing nine runs off eight hits, walked three and struck out three.

Andrew Theiss pitched four innings, allowing one run off three hits and striking out five batters.

 

Clear Lake 3

Humboldt 1

The Lions snatched up a conference win Wednesday, June 19 against the Humboldt Wildcats.

The Lions were the first to pounce with one run scored in the top of the second before the Wildcats answered back in the bottom of the second with a run of their own.

It was a dual for the two teams as no one would score in the third, but Clear Lake found a run in the fourth to lead the Wildcats 2-1.

The seventh inning saw one more run by the Lions to give a little cushion as the Wildcat bats would get going in the seventh but come up short of any comeback and the Lions improved to 8-7 on the season.

The Lions recorded three runs off five hits, including four singles and one double with three RBI.

Anderson recorded one RBI, along with Strayer and Keeton Jeppeson.

Luke Fuhrman recorded the teams lone double and scored two runs for the Lions.

It was a clean game for the fielders lined up behind Fuhrman and Hudson Carney on the mound with 21 put outs and three assists on 24 total chances.

Carney received the win on the night, pitching 5.2 innings, allowing one run off five hits, walking seven and striking out seven batters. Fuhrman pitched 1.1 innings and allowed two hits and struck out one.

 

Decorah 5

The Lions suffered a loss to the visiting Decorah Vikings on Thursday, June 20 despite finding ways to get on base.

The Vikings started things early with one run in the first and three in the second to lead 4-0 before the Lions put a run across home plate to trail 4-1.

The next three innings saw plenty of action with both teams finding ways to get on base including plenty of steals, in which Decorah had six stolen bases. However, both teams struggled to find anyone to get home until the sixth inning in which both teams traded runs.

The Lions put themselves in position to score in the seventh with two outs but were unable to get home once again and fell to 8-8 on the season with a 5-2 loss to the Vikings.

The Lions saw seven hits, two runs, five singles and two doubles in the loss, led by the stick of Andrew Theiss who saw two hits, a double and a single and one RBI that put Bieber across home. Bieber had two hits, one run a single and a double.

Jaxson Anderson saw time on the mound, pitching 5.1 innings and recorded four runs off six hits, three walks and six strike outs.

Wesley Wharton relieved the young thrower for 1.2 innings, allowing one run off one hit and one strike out.

 

Clear Lake 10

The Lions ended the week on a high note with a 10-0 win over the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys on Friday, June 21.

The game wasn’t a total blowout to begin with as the Lions scored one run to open the game, but the Cowboys stayed close until the fourth when Clear Lake scored four to blow the doors open.

The fifth and sixth innings saw the Lions score five more runs to lead 10-0 as the Cowboys failed to produce any offense to stay in the game.

It was a complete six-inning game for the senior Theiss who allowed only three hits, one walk, one hit by pitch and struck out seven batters.

The fielders behind Theiss committed two errors but saw 17 put outs and seven assists on 26 total chances.

At bat, the Lions scored 10 runs off seven hits with eight RBI.

Jeppeson recorded three RBI, Tanner Nelson recorded two and Theiss, Bieber and Anderson each had one.

The Lion baserunners had six stolen bases on the night as well with Theiss stealing two.

 

Webster City 10 

Clear Lake 0

The Lions faced a tough Webster City Lynx team that bested them after five innings, 10-0.

The Lynx bats were hot and on the mark, recording 11 hits with two doubles and seven  RBI in a game that went off the rails for the hosts in Clear Lake.

After a scoreless first inning, the Lions gave up three runs followed by another three in the top of the fourth to trail 6-0.

Things looked better for Clear Lake in the fourth, holding the Lynx to no runs, but the fifth proved to be the end of the game with four runs in favor of Webster City.

The Lions needed a run to keep the game alive, but fell short and the game ended 10-0 in favor of the third place Lynx.

The Lions sit at 9-9 on the season and are fourth in the North Central Conference at 5-4 behind Webster City (8-4, 13-9), Humboldt (8-4, 13-6) and Algona (13-0, 22-4).
